AIBU in thinking that the very worst criminals have rather helpfully framed themselves? And can now be locked up/rehabilitiated and saved the Met a lot of energy finding evidence to convict them?

I have long planned a criminal career on the lines of Raffles/the best of Agatha Christie but I have never put my plans into action because I have a gut feeling that murder is somewhat anti-social. And there would also be a danger of being caught and banged to rights. The last thing that I would do, in my masterplan of crime, would be to be caught on CCTV looting a television. Did no one of the rioters think this through? I despair at the criminal element. There is absolutely no Poirot episode in this. Where is the nuance?

Ah, juggling, this is the true problem with today's youth. Not enough Agatha Christie, or Sherlock Holmes for the matter. Surely they should be offering bizarre jobs to people with a particular coloured hair in order to sneak into their basement and dig a hole through to the next door electronics shop. Simply smashing a window and grabing a TV is just so...well...boring!

@ILT; as an ex-member of the police service, what do you think about my theory that the looters have helpfully framed themselves? With CCTV evidence. We have been told for years that we are the most CCTVed nation. Why on earth commit a crime on camera? I think that a large number of the looters were already known to the police. Does this not make the Olympics safer, given that the most troublesome people have volunteered to be photographed commiting crimes, and will all be safely locked away?

??? Helpfully framed themselves? Do you mean they posed for CCTV photos?

I suspect that many of the "very worst criminals" will never be brought to account.

I further suspect that if the Met's finest had taken action to quash the disorder/looting/riot when it first occurred in Tottenham, it would have saved them and other police forces a considerable amount of energy.

As it is, once again the taxpayer picks up a huge bill for the Met's poor decision making.

Sadly I think the 'very worst criminals' who were involved will have been savvy enough to cover their faces and not get caught. Meanwhile there will be a helluva lot of easily-led youngsters who joined in on the fringes, committing what would be considered petty crimes in any other circumstances, who are having the book thrown at them.

I honestly believe that those caught on CCTV think ' cameras don't work' sort of like my dads way of thinking with speed cameras ' they dont work, are just there for show'

I despair at the younger generation of criminals. How can we help them? I despair. I am thinking of starting a charity with the aim of providing copies of Agatha Christie/Arthur Conan Doyle/Dorothy Sayers. I have spent so many years working out how to dispose of a body (I have it!; it involves beaches; I think that was what happened to Shergar). What on earth do they teach in prisons these days?

Which just proves my point. They are not a homogenous lot, these looters. There are black ones and white ones, some from one-parent families, some from two-parent families, some with degrees, some without, some with jobs, some without, some who are young, some who aren't. The one thing that binds them all together is that they are fucking STUPID.

Which begs the rather more serious question of how have we as parents and teachers raised a generation who really are that stupid??

Madeoff was a criminal, but he had a plan. I think that he may have planned to die before his Ponzi scheme was exposed, but at least he had a plan.
