we get loads of cold callers round here and its often at really inconvenient times.
I downloaded a " no cold callers " sign from Martin Lewis' website and stuck it in plain view on the door.
Not had any more til tonight,just as Id got the baby off to sleep,which set the dog barking and woke the baby up...
When i pointed out the sign the man just said it was his job to knock on doors....
AIBU to email the charity to ask them to ask their workers to respect these signs?

Chances are it is a company who employs students and other people to go around fundraising on behalf of the charities (I can't for the life of me remember there name now) so not sure how much impact emailing the charity would have but its worth a try!!

You should if it bothers you, and they usually apologise.

I checked the law on this. Callers can ignore 'no cold calling' signs. However if you then ask them to leave and they don't, that's trespass and you can call the police.

Some local authorities are trying to reach voluntary agreements with utility companies, because it's especially not nice for vulnerable old people to be bothered at night up to 9pm when they've got to the effort of putting a sign up.

I think that Sky operatives are told to ignore signs, actually. That's what one of them told me anyway, when I had a 'chat' with him on my doorstep.

YANBU he probably had been told not to but was trying his luck (because they are all on commission)... And if he hadn't, he should have been. I also have the dog + baby issue.

As a fundraiser, I would be livid if the agency canvassing for us did this. We have a strict policy that any signs should be observed. I suggest telling the charity, and also telling any further canvassers that you will report their agency to the PFRA (www.pfra.org.uk) - face to face fundraising is one area that is specifically regulated, and they are very hot on taking up complaints as it is very important o them to improve the image of face to face.

I stopped my regular donation to a charity a few weeks back after a cold caller appeared on my doorstep one Friday night, at my DD's bedtime.

In spite of the fact that we ALREADY DONATED to them. Well, not any more we don't! I emailed them to explain why my DD had been cancelled. I live on a street full of older people and young families, so the cold caller probably got short shrift all round.
