birthday cards...is it just me?

ds is eighteen today,both gms have given the usual card and money,( much appreciated) .but no acknowledgement that it is his eighteenth.aibu to think that it would have been nice to get cards with eighteenth bday on them or is turning eighteen no big deal these days? it feels a bit like they have forgotten his age.

Maybe they would celebrate 21st more than 18th?

Dd is 18 next year and I'm planning an announcement in the paper, small family party and a 'tiffany' necklace! (of course)

To some it is no big deal, I think it is though, becoming an adult, and should be celebrated as such. Kids always get more on their eighteenth surely?

Do the cards say Grandson on them?

It is very difficult to find a card that says both age and family relationship I have found.

Sometimes it's hard to find a decent card with 18th on, - I have discovered recently. I bought one without the age but did write "happy 18th" inside, I would think that's the right thing to do.

It's sometimes difficult keeping up with my own age, let alone anyone elses.

yanbu. Although it's not the end of the world, at least they remembered.

However, I banned people from giving me cards with '30' on them and will do the same for my 40th.

unless you are throwing a party then yes, i think 18 is much less a 'statement' these days.

young people seem do so much more at a younger age now, i mean travel/owning 'adult' gadgets (not those sorts of gadgets ) etc

when i was a teenager you only got your 1st stereo as your 16th birthday gift

i think for our grandparents generation, the focus was always on 21 - key to the door and all that. I also think i remember reading somewhere that it was the most common age (21 or 30) to be allowed access to your inheritance/trust fund moneys etc in a bygone day, so it seemed 21 was more about becoming an "adult". I remember the one grandparent i had left by the time i was 21 actually sent me a card that year, as she had 20+ grandkids she didn't usually bother, but a 21 was always noted.

yes 18, and now 16 too it seems, seem really special - maybe part of the "our kids grow up so much faster these days" syndrome we talk about. I saw my first "sweet sixteen" cards in Tesco not long ago - i am in my 40s and 16 wasn't a "special" one back then, it was 18.

squeakytoy.that is true, we had to chose between a son or 18th card ourselves.some card company should take a note of that gap in the market.but neither gm had even wrote a little note inside about it being his eighteenth which is what i would have done.
