to 'drop' a plate I received in a gift?

Said wall plate is bright yellow with a very tacky picture on it from Turkey.

Given to me by one of my best friends who I really thought had better taste. Not entirely sure its not a joke but she seemed serious when she gave it to me, along with a gorgeous outfit for DD.

Anyway, she is visiting today, and both DH and my Mother have said that I better get the plate on the wall. I can't bring myself to do it! It will stick out like a sore thumb, we barely have anything on our walls, just not our thing.

So would I be unreasonable to have a tragic accident with it whilst trying to put it up? Does a bright yellow plate serve any other useful purpose? Its currently hiding under my fruit bowl.

I would serve some biscuits on it.

Put the fruit on it and hide the fruit bowl for the day.

Don't put it out, she might think you like it and get you another one similar. Have you any houseplants? Use it as a drip dish?

I wouldn't have it on show at all. If she asks about it, just say it was lovely of her to give it to you, but it just isn't the sort of thing you want on your wall.

Something that looks great on holiday (actually your plate doesn't seem to have looked good at any time) often looks out of place once it's back home. Have it ready to show her - she'll probably be appalled at her poor taste. Ask her if she wants it for her home - see how fast she says no!

I don't think you're obliged to put it on display just because she gave it to you. You can put it in the cupboard with your other plates/serving dishes. If she asks about it this time, you can tell her it's with my others and have your nasty accident at your leisure.

I have a similar problem with a huge and hideous vase. Luckily the friend who gave it to me loves it to bits and I'm magnanimously going to gift it to her because, try as I might, I can't get it to 'go' with the colours in any of my rooms and it would look just perfect on her fireplace.....
