We moved our family and belongings to South Africa in January with hubbies job and we've come here willingly. Kids settled in school, hubbies job going well and me? It's great to be a SAHM/Lady of leisure (visa states visitor for 2 years) but 6 months on I'm bored, I thought I could handle not working, gave up my studies with the OU as there's distance learning and living at the bottom of the world.
Am I being unreasonable to ask hubby to get his employers to revisit the status of my visa or is it now just my responsibility and where do I start?

It might be reasonable but not sure it's practical to want to shift the goalposts after six months with your DH and his employer. However, I'm sure you could ask around your community and see if there are any voluntary projects you could get involved with. In a place like RSA, I expect a lot of people could use your help.

Thanks, I've looked into some voluntary teaching, but in SA style, a call back may take a while.
The issue has arisen because HR hired an agency to do the visas and wanted us here as quick as possible, we really didn't give much thought to it, our fault, we trusted the experts, I just want hubby to ask HR to change visa status now rather than in 18 months, so I can at least continue my studies.

Be careful...don't work illegally. As a visitor you are probably not entitled to work but maybe find some voluntary work to do.

It amy sound very WI but consider setting up an expats womens group, I'm sure there are plenty of things you could do.

Hi, I'm currently looking into voluntary work. I'm also afraid I've been gien the number for the ex pat group but I'm ignoring it, I don't want to live as the English do but in a warmer climate. I'm sure they are very nice people but I've had my fill of clubs and groups...

Why dismiss the ex-pats? Chances are one of them will have had exactly the dilemma you're facing now and will be well-placed to give you useful advice..... Better than a bunch of largely UK-based strangers on a parenting website at any rate.

I know you're right and I know I should give them a chance, I've met alot of ex-pats on twitter and like everywhere some have been really helpful and others quite dismissive 'well i managed' la la la. I've joined an online ex-pat group and will be joining them for their next meet up. The ex-pat group I'm referring to, are based on the golf estate where we live and are all 60+ i know that means lots of experience but I've seen what they get up to and I don't do bridge or play golf
