To think it is too early to start Christmas?

I admit to buying bits throughout the year but is it not too early when schools have only been finished 5 minutes?!

Twice today I've looked at the fireplace and idly wondered how lovely it'll look with stockings over it. And dd asked only yesterday if it will snow soon.

Christmas is sneaking in here already and I don't care. I adore it. All of it. From about June onwards. Only for a minute a day at first. I won't properly embrace the joy until October.

janetsplanet · 25/07/2011 19:26

I buy throughout the year and have only one thing left to get youngest and have the other 2 DC main presents

Gastonladybird · 25/07/2011 19:30

Showofhands am with you- actually lay awake wondering what dh would

Don't get me wrong I love Christmas and as Dd's birthday is November I do have presents stashed away but don't you think it spoils the excitement and build up to it if the shops start selling stuff in July?
Or do I need a Grinch emoticon? :)

Nope, it makes me look forward to Christmas. I don't have to buy it after all. It just fills me with the loveliest joy to think about it secretly in the middle of summer. And then to see it creeping in in other ways. And when the weather loses its humidity and you get the bite and crunch of autumn on a still day. Oh I love it...

I ban the C word in this house until after Bonfire Night.

YANBU. I'd be sick of Christmas by the end of August if I started preparing for it now. Ideally I'd only start thinking about it when Advent begins on 1st December. Realistically I know I need a few more weeks ahead of that as things get so busy, but I would be very unhappy to start now.

Olivetti · 25/07/2011 19:41

It's just weird - people determined to wish their lives away!

fluffywhitekittens · 25/07/2011 19:41

Ahh, but my thread is about shops selling Christmas things in July, which is obviously unreasonable. Grin

Who's wishing their lives away? Enjoying the build up to something and anticipating its arrival is hardly wishing your life away. I'm not sitting in my chair sobbing that it's months away. I'm bouncing round the garden enjoying my blooming flowers and trees and thinking a million thoughts. Occasionally, one of them is about my favourite time of year.

I've started putting things away for next year's holiday too if you're interested. I'm still happy for the rest of this year and early 2012 to happen first.

TeacupTempest · 25/07/2011 20:07

I am having a Christmas baby (well due 13th Dec) so am more excited than I would usually be and have been having a fair few Christmas related daydreams.

DogsBestFriend · 25/07/2011 20:09

I did not just today put a couple of ebay bids on some vintage glass baubles. No, no, not me.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 25/07/2011 20:09

Theres only 152 days to go you know.....

FancyALittle · 25/07/2011 20:10

On 25th June (wet and orrible Saturday) we had a '6 months till Christmas' roast dinner. Started my Christmas shopping for my dad yesterday (nightmare to buy for). I love christmas and am just beginning to miss it.

squeakytoy · 25/07/2011 20:10

It is for the benefit of summer tourists I imagine, particularly overseas visitors who want traditional english christmassy stuff to take home.

Becaroooo · 25/07/2011 20:14

Saw my first ad for "xmas parties" at a local hotel on saturday!!! Grin

I havent bought anything yet! Most unusual for me!

Waiting til later this year AND I WILL STICK TO MY BUDGET

DontCallMePeanut · 25/07/2011 20:14

I haven't already planned DS's birthday present (his birthday is two weeks after Christmas) and I'm not checking back on The Nightmare Before Christmas stock, either... (DS wants a Jack Skelington tree topper...) Grin

PaperBank · 25/07/2011 20:19

It will get earlier and earlier. It will all start in January if we're not careful. Then we'll need to pick a "non Christmas" day each year.

BrigitBigKnickers · 25/07/2011 20:20

I went in to a card shop today to buy a birthday card and there was a whole wall dedicated to Christmas cards!

Do people seriously start buying their Christmas cards in July???

DontCallMePeanut · 25/07/2011 20:22

I buy mine in January... (They're cheaper and I'm a skint student) Grin

fluffywhitekittens · 25/07/2011 20:51

Buying in January is fine, although I do tend to forget where I've put them. Buying them in July is not fine IMO. :)

No such thing as too early IMHO

I love the idea of Christmas shopping but IRL by the time I've been to 2 shops and got all the bags ,getting my purse out is a bit of a pain in the neck.
Need to buy bits throughout the year when I see them (bought half price party poppers for my Christmas Day table last week)
DS's birthday is December so we don't put any decorations up til after (except the advent tree)

I am watching Christmas in July on QVC but I missed most of it because I've been at work and DH has been keeping me away from QVC watching Mythbusters.
Not bought anything yet.But the day ain't over yetGrin
