To not answer the door?

DontCallMePeanut · 20/07/2011 13:19

Someone has, not long ago, banged on my front door, almost offsetting a panic attack. AIBU to not open the door when, firstly, I'm not expecting any visitors and secondly, they bang that loudly on the door that I jumped half a mile out of my skin?

I'm being a paranoid nutjob, aren't I? Blush

No way! I hate it when that happens. Just stay put, It's probably the betterware man. :)

fuckmepinkandcallmerosie · 20/07/2011 13:24

I am going to bed shortly for a snooze. I am intending to lock the front and back doors, unplug the phone and ignore everyone.

(Disclaimer, I'm pregnant and I have a very very sore back)

YANBU

DontCallMePeanut · 20/07/2011 13:24

Don't have a betterware man, afaik...

Meter reader?

WhipMeIndiana · 20/07/2011 13:27

I dont answer the door sometimes. have to be in the mood to deal with charity salespeople/ gas readers etc.

AuntieMonica · 20/07/2011 13:28

it's prob someone trying to get you to change energy suppliers. we've had loads round since British Gas announced their price rise

I open the door to them sometimes if i'm not busy.

I play for points against my sister, who lives round the corner Grin

10 points for a 'Is your DP in'

20 points for a 'Is your mum in' (doesn't happen anymore Sad)

10 points for a 'Hi, I'm not selling anything'

10 points for a 'Aw, how old is the DC'

50 points if you get them to leave a leaflet!

and so on

DontCallMePeanut · 20/07/2011 13:32

Haha! AM, a "Is your DP in" would be 100 points and the door shut in their face... Grin

You are being a wee bit paranoid but your house, your door, your choice to open or not!

Ime posties, meter readers and the like do tend to hammer on doors and also ring the bell several times when there is no need.

I find it quite rude but I suppose they do it to try and get people to the door faster and so they are not stood there ages wondering if the bell worked or not.

AuntieMonica · 20/07/2011 13:35

Peanut they don't get away with it!! Grin

Sarsaparilllla · 20/07/2011 13:38

I ignore the door and the landline if I can't be arsed and I'm not expecting anyone

If they wanted me that much and it was important they'd have rung my mobile first before coming round

Ignore away :)

TakeMeDrunkImHome · 20/07/2011 13:39

Have never understand people thinking they need permission off random strangers before they believe they don't have to open their door to anyone they don't want to! If i'm not expecting anyone, I rarely answer. People have to walk right by my front window to get to the door and if I am in front room they can see me, still doesn't mean I answer if I don't want to.

DooinMeCleanin · 20/07/2011 13:41

But it might be a delivery man with lots of new summery clothes for your trip to Turkey. Oh, wait, no. That's me! Sorry. As you were Grin [shameless showing off]

I always answer the door but I do a lot of internet shopping so I am usually expecting something. My sister also has a habit of just turning up unannounced.

DontCallMePeanut · 20/07/2011 13:46

Dooin, you're trying to make us jealous, aren't you... Hmm

OP posts:
DooinMeCleanin · 20/07/2011 13:47

Yup! But we really do use mail order a lot. Unfortunately it is usually pet supplies Grin

robingood19 · 20/07/2011 13:50

I have a 6 foot locked garden gate and often ignore knockers. It is just a question of feeling safe in your own home

JanMorrow · 20/07/2011 13:53

I never answer the door unless we're expecting someone, makes it easier that we're in a flat on the 4th floor, so nobody can see in the windows to check if we're in! HA!

TheSmallPrint · 20/07/2011 13:53

Funnily enough I just had someone knock at my door but I saw them coming and knew it was the people who pretend to be reformed from prison selling you crap quality products for massively inflated prices.

How many points do I get for 'are you the lady of the house?' and how many do I get for replying 'yes I am and I'm not buying any of that' ?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/07/2011 13:55

dooin - can you recommend any particularly reliable pet supply suppliers?

I use Pet Meds for flea and worm stuff.

And and Petplanet or Amazon for leads and training aids etc.

I've used these before too

MsChanandlerBong · 20/07/2011 14:09

I was just reading this thread and someone knocked really loudly on the front door, and rang the bell. Completely made me jump and freaked me out!!! Answered the door whilst checking for Candid Camera type equipment, and it was someone trying to sell me windows... this is why I normally treat the front door like my phone - only answer it if a)I know who it is or b)I don't mind dealing with a random!

Ambergambler · 20/07/2011 14:52

I seem to have pretty much resolved this since putting up a 'no cold callers welcome' sign. Having suffered a grumpy and over tired toddler because people knock like they are trying to put their hand through the glass, and startle him awake when he isn't ready, I no longer have any patience for it. Epspecially the sodding SWALEC man to read the meter.... Not even with bloody SWALEC!
I answer the door if I choose to. If I don't feel sociable, or not dressed or whatever, then I ignore it.

TheSmallPrint · 20/07/2011 14:58

Amber I have a sign on my door too, no one pays any attention to it. I now just point at it.
