While there is a market for rubbish there will be a supply. It's better than the Pravda/Isvestia alternative.

We may or may not be sentient. I don't think it's something that we will ever quite figure out. Francis Crick (of Watson&Crick, DNA) spent a long time at the end of his life working on the science of consciousness.

It makes sense to behave as if we are though.

Sentience exists if you can agree that the human mind displays the quality of consiousness, which cannot be explained away by an analysis of neurons, hormones and neural pathways. It is more than the sum of it's parts. We can make independent decisions that are often unpredictable (dispite what behavioural conditioning might claim), and have a variety of feelings and even react totally differently to the same stimulai as the enxt person.

Sentience and indeed consciousness itself exists whether it is an illusion or not. Whether we are an independent being or a colony of single celled organisms acting like one being, it matters not.

We are alive. We think. We feel. We are sentient.
