A suit / oficce attire to a meeting with a recruitment consultant?

I have been looking for a new job.
, going back into the sales industy which I have lots of experience in. I have spoken to a local recruitment agency and my consultant has said she has a couple of vacancies which she'd like to put me forward for but has asked me to pop into her office for a chat and to discuss my salary requirements etc.

I currently wear a uniform for work, I do not currently own a suit or anything remotely smart / suit / officey like. Obviously a new work wear wardrobe will be purchased for interviews and new job but I have to meet the consultant tomorrow so no time to shop before.

AIBU to go jut wearing casualish clothes. Won't wear jeans or trainers etc, was thinking a nice cotton long summer skirt, a nice top and sandals?

I think that would be fine. So long as you are neat and clean I don't see a problem.

Personally I would say better to play safe and dress smart.

I think your outfit sounds good, too. as long as it looks smart, it's fine.

Dress smartly. Sales as you know is very competitive and it's all about image. If you go to the interview with the consultant looking wearing an outfit that you'd wear for lunch with girlfriends then you might find other people being put forward ahead of you. The consultant wields a lot of power!!

Too casual. Beg or borrow a suit.

Beg buy or borrow a suit IMMEDIATELY. The decision to hire is made in the first 5 seconds that you walk into the room - the interview is simply for them to find sufficient evidence to back up their decision. If you don't look the part, you won't get the part. I know this is only the recruitment consultant, but why make it harder for them - you need them on your side, and they know what the punters are looking for.

As an ex recruitment consultant I would advise you to suit up otherwise it can come over as sloppy

Working in recruitment myself, I'd def advise something more formal, trousers and shirt if not a suit maybe? Casual clothes will give the impression that you aren't that bothered...

I'm in the process of job-hunting at the moment and all of the recruitment consultants I've met with have advised dressing as you would for an interview, i.e. suit or smart dress.

With the job market as difficult as it is at the moment I'd do everything in your power to boost your chances....with so many people after each role you need to grab every opportunity you can to lift yourself above the competition.

Do you have a large Sainsburys or Tesco near to you so you could go buy a cheap suit there tonight?

Or maybe a Next or M&S on a retail park - they're often open til 8pm.

Even you can't manage a jacket, I'd go with tailored skirt or pants and a formal plain blouse.

If you can't get a suit then you can't. But do dress as smartly as you possibly can, because it will help.

Suit up or the recruitment consultant is not going to put you forward for any decent jobs - frankly I am amazed you are asking this question - will you not have to dress smartly once you are actually in post?

At a push, I'd wear your uniform and explain that you are going straight to work/have come out of work.
What time is your interview? Next deliver next day before 9pm :)

Thanks all! I have been doing the same job for ages so not been into a recruitment agency office for years. I actually worked in a recruitment office years ago and it was all very casual and we wore smart casual clothes (not suits) and so did candidates coming in to chat with us.

Obviously, I would only ever wear suits for an actual job interview- this is more just a chat. However, it seems Im a little out of touch about recruitment consultants expectations.

I went to Next at the retail park ( open til 9pm) and now have a nice new tailored skirt suit for tomorrow! Thanks for all your posts.

Well I wore my new smart suit and the recruitment consultant was dressed a bit trampy. Rough looking hair and a tired old summer dress and flip flops! :) Still, never mind!
