To have not used my degree for anything.

I'm not sure if I'm the only one but hearing on the news about university fees got me thinking about the debt I got into to get my degree in history.
At the time I wanted to be a teacher when I 1st started my degree, but when I completed and was in so much debt I took office jobs and I've never done anything with my degree. Is anyone out there the same?

a degree is still a useful thing to have

true, morebeta - but i think a lot of peopel are going to uni because there aren't the apprenticeships or companies too go into.
they see it as a way to get a better start.

I used my degree to open the door to my first job but haven't used anything I learned during those 3 years. A few years ago I was working alongside someone who had started with the company at 16. He had worked his way up and was doing exactly the same job as me, earning about the same salary and was about the same age as me. Two different routes to the same end.

MoreBeta - I am surprised that you think that your MBA only taught you technical skills. I also use my MBA every day of my life (and the analytical frameworks that I learned in strategy consulting) but the skills I learned on it inform my wider analytical thinking hugely. I value the breadth of thinking that university enables, but I value those sensible skills for thinking about life, be it micro or macro life, that MBAs provide.

If you use MBA skills every day of you rlife, you must have been a bit short on the old skills front before getting it.

MoreBeta · 29/06/2011 17:49

I use the technical finance part every day.

Bonsoir · 29/06/2011 17:49

I suggest you do an MBA, pointydog, and then post again Wink

... more MNers needs to know about ABC and make or buy decision-making, and negotiation analysis would transform the "feminists" on here Wink

And realise such a huge skills deficit? Not likely Grin

I haven't used my degrees at all. They were interesting, but completely useless. I wish I'd had the confidence to ignore whoever it was that told me that "art is a hobby, not a career", I might actually have a career or at least the chance of one now.

But hey, at least I bagged myself a rich husband at uni Hmm
