No, it cost me a bloody fortune!

poppyknot · 23/06/2011 22:15

DH would love to have a carport. There are not so many up here in Scotland. He notices these things Grin

CarrieOakey · 23/06/2011 22:15

We had one when we lived abroad and yes we inherited it.

AuntiePickleBottom · 23/06/2011 22:17

off to google carport

Hassled · 23/06/2011 22:17

Woman across the road tells me she has a carport. It looks suspiciously like a garage to me.

AuntiePickleBottom · 23/06/2011 22:19

i like the look of them, i have a terreced house not no way of having a garage but this could be put over a drive (when we get around to putting in the planning permission)

MrsRhettButler · 23/06/2011 22:20

Have I got a what?

CroissantNeuf · 23/06/2011 22:20

They were a must-have in the 70s but seem to be quite rare now.

TheArmadillo · 23/06/2011 22:20

we rent

the house has a carport and two completely seperate garages (at the opposite side of the house to the carport).

we're not sure why.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 23/06/2011 22:28

I've heard it's the new FromRoadSignal that the house belongs to swingers.

OP posts:
CroissantNeuf · 23/06/2011 22:30

Do you reckon they were signs of Swingers back in the 70s too?

I'm sure the houses with car ports in the street I grew up in also had pampas grass in the front gardens

Jonnyfan · 23/06/2011 22:33

I think they've gone out of fashion.
Used to have one...

cantpooinpeace · 23/06/2011 22:33

lol @ Mrs

Choufleur · 23/06/2011 22:35

We had a carport when I was growing up. And pampas grass!

ChaosTrulyReigns · 23/06/2011 22:37

Oh Choufleur, are you revisiting all those hazy childhood memories?

not useless. great for playing under when it rains. or for hitting a tennis ball endlessly against the wall after being told to "go out and play" by parents.

3Questionmarks · 23/06/2011 22:53

I stand corrected. That is a good game

ChaosTrulyReigns · 23/06/2011 23:01

Just like a chiffing great umbrella, with salacious overtones.

NormanTheForeman · 23/06/2011 23:05

No, but the people across the road used to have one (in the 70s). Apparently it's better for your car to be under a car port than in a garage - because it protects it from the worst of the rain, but allows air to circulate so your car dries off quicker and is lesslikely to rust......

emmanumber3 · 23/06/2011 23:09

I have carport envy. I do not have a carport - just a plain old driveway, as does my neighbour. The two houses behind us are identical in most ways but they both have carports over their drives. They are newish houses - why would the builders do that? Build two with carports & two without? To be fair though, I only want one to keep my recycling bins dry Hmm.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 23/06/2011 23:20

Lot of justification there Norm.

We have one (inherited). It sits at the top of our drive that is at least a foot too narrow to fit even a small car onto/up Confused Hmm. It is an excellent out of back door dumping ground and clothes drying area though. It was also a fabulous outdoor/indoor smoking area at our party a couple of years ago.
