I work very part time. Have 3 young dc. DH has a well paid job. I have a perfect credit history. Even worked in the finance industry for 15 years before dc. I only want a specific cr card to be able to benefit from a reward scheme and cheap ccy. I can't even apply as my income is below the magic figure. The only way round it is to get dh to apply for one. AIBU to feel devalued by this. I know its their card therfore their rules but you would think they would consider each applicant on its own merit. Incidently dh is not going on holiday with me.

YABU

it's not a personal decision about your value to society, it's a business decision by the credit card company, so you're being a bit daft to get upset. Each card has a target audience and if you're want a specific card then you need to meet those conditions.

I'm a SAHM with no wage at all and can qualify for decent credit cards, they just don;t give a very high limit.

my concern would be what would happen if they gave credit cards to those who don't have well off husbands and have nothing to fall back on? this could lead to lots of people who are maybe not as responsible as you getting themselves into debt with no way of paying it off.

Surely though by doing a credit search they could see I have have paid off balance in full on a card with a 2500 limit ever since I obtained in nearly 20 years ago. I do already have a credit card so thats not the issue. I just wanted a particular one as their exchange rates are better and you can pay using the cr card without fees unlike my debit card which will charge. I have admitted that it is their card and their rules but I am still a little frustrated.

Maybe i will have to do as they say and get the man of the house to apply and make me secondary cardholder.

They can turn you down for a whole manner of things- Volkswagen car credit turned me down as I wasn't on the electoral register- despite having an excellent credit rating, very well paid job and no missed payments on my credit cards etc. I was very upset at the time as I felt I was being treated like some kind of half witted feckless person!

There are loads of bank products that require a certain level of income. Banks are entitled to take income into account when deciding who they lend to (in fact it's very sensible for them to do so...)

I have always worked part-time and some years back wanted a Tesco credit card to get the extra vouchers. DH suggested joint names but me as first card as he was too busy at work to ring and sort out.

I duly rang up and arranged card and having approved it they asked if I wanted the "ordinary" or the "platinum" card. Being a bit of a poser on the sly I asked for platinum to be told I didn't earn enough so couldn't have one but if I said I was a housewife with no income I could be first cardholder on a card with DH as he did earn enough! The only options to get one were either for DH to apply or for me to say I didn't work so by declaring a lower total family income we got their posher card
