AIBU to be pissed off that school decided to cancel sports day yesterday at the last minute due to the weather when i had booked a 1/2 day off work?

No, YANBU at all. Clearly it was done to spite you, and the bad weather booked especially. It would have been better for you to spend your afternoon off standing in the rain watching all the DC falling over on the slippery grass....

yes, I thought IWBU but it still really annoyed me....I rang to double check when I was drizzling and they said it was definitely going ahead, so i went ahead with my half days holiday. To point out, it was still only drizzling when they called it off and didnt get heavier here until later on

Yes, but as the rain didn't stop, it's not what's currently falling but how much has already fallen. Fields and tracks covered in surface water are dangerous, better to cancel than have lots of accidents and injured children.

It's when they cancel one day and rebook it for 3 days later.
I know the weather is out of anyones control and the school has to do the events within a certain time-frame; but I can't just take off a day/ half day with no notice.

Its actually quite dangerous for kids to run on wet grass! Im sure it was done for teh childrens safety rather than to piss you off.

My ds's school did this. The forecast for the day was bad. From the morning there was intermittent rain. All morning the school kept sending texts saying the sports day would still go ahead. Then, 10 minutes before it was due to start, the heavens opened and they sent a text to cancel. Many parents were already arriving.

I think in my school's case it wasn't rocket science that the weather would be bad. Better to take an earlier decision - say at 10.00 that morning, or something - and cancel, and have the weather turn out better, than to cancel so very late. It's the last minuteness that bothered me, not the cancellation, as they did advertise a different day as a 'stand-by' date in case of bad weather.

Ours have one day then a reserve for the next day if it rains.

Sue the school for being stuuuupid enough to run sports day in the week that Glastonbury starts. Every sane person knows it's duck weather week.

I think they should have back up plans, let's face it they must have to call them off pretty often.

• Have sports day in the rain - parents moan about their little darlings getting wet, about the parents getting wet, staff worry about a child falling over and the parents suing the the school.

Re-schedule the sports day - parents moan that 'H & S' issues have gone mad, and it is hard for parents to arrange more time off work etc anyway.

OP...really YABU. I mean if the weather people can't always get the forecast right, I don't see how you can expect the school to predict it?
