to not host a 1st birthday party

For my dc, my nct group are all but one doing one each, its ridiculous, all the babies were born in same month, so its impossible for them not to clash, not enough weekends to go round! As with all things nct, its like some kind of competition! Who can spend the most, hold the biggest party, I cannot be bothered, and the look of surprise I get when I announce were not doing one, were off out for the day to the zoo instead... its Luke I committed a heinous crime!

They are 1 ffs, they won't know, so, its not really whether iabu, rather, your experiences of this kind...or aibu?!

UUrgh. MY NCT crew are doing 1 combined for all babies which will be a relaxed BBQ. Not in the lest competitive, you lot sound like a PITA. We will do a small family party for our DD on her actual birthday, very low key though, more the GP's benefit then anything else!

I won't be but thankfully my baby was born in december so I won't be expected to.

A nice family day out sounds much nicer than having your house destroyed taken over. After doing dds 1st birthday at home I said never again and we've done her next two out of the house. Our house is too small for so many people and it was hard to keep all of the children amused for 2 hours.

We had grandparents round for some cake-wouldn't have impressed anyone! I think before they get to a more social age birthdays are really for family/close friends only.
I suppose we had parties for their nonreligious but similar to a christening thing that we had when they were 6 months old-extended family/friends from work/nct friends-we invited the lot!
Do what you like and they're saddos if they're compparing each other's celebrations.

YANBU doing What you want to do but i think it's a really important Birthday- it's the number 1, the first one ever. Of course they won't remember but IME it was exciting to organise, Host my first childs first Birthday. It was family, young cousins only and did a joint nct thing. We also took him Out on his Birthday.

It is not always/often motivated by a need to compete with other parents, some people just enjoy doing these things.

We did also have a little party with close friends and family but it was very low key and Dd spent most of it having her nap!

One year olds do not know what the hell's going on anyway so it's really for the grown ups.

Your post makes me glad I didn't do the NCT thing. And you are not being unreasonable!

I have a house rule - no-one gets a full on party till they're 4.
Has worked well so far, we do a small family tea/cake thing.
They don't remember! It's more for you at this age to have something to celebrate as a family.

Yes but i don't remember my 2nd, 3rd or 4th and i have an incredibly good memory. These birthdays are not for memories there for fun in the present context and the 1st birthday is for your memories. A 1 year old isn't going to remember a day trip to the Zoo either!

Why the feck would you arrange a birthday party for a 1 (or 2 or 3) year old anyway?

YANBU, our NCT group had a group party, we all contributed food and held it at the biggest of our houses! We did 'secret santa' for the presents.

YANBU. Our boys do not have a proper party until they are 3 years old. The first two birthdays are usually us, parents, DC's in park for a picnic or something very simple.

We went out to Seaworld with his cousins which he really enjoyed. After dinner at his grandparents, he got a cake and a candle and the look of delight on his face when he realised that everyone was singing to him was brilliant.

Better than any sort of stress with loads of kids and party games IMO.

My DC's are 6 and nearly 4, so far we haven't had any parties for them.
We go out for the day and have cake at home with the grandparent's later.

I have told DD she can have a party when she's 16 but may relent next year.

Of course YANBU. We did throw a party for DD's first birthday but we did it for ourselves really to celebrate getting through a whole year of parenthood. There was quite a lot of wine involved.

I can see with you lot that it's an excuse to have celebration. Good on you - anything at the moment to cheer things up and shut out the problems of the world. Happy 1st Birthday!!!

we just had a cake and lots of squirty cream for the first birthday photo. that was it. they will not remember their first birthday and as long as you have the photo of baby-destroying-cake-and-smearing-cream-everywhere...

for DD's first we had 2 friends over for some nibbles and a crawl.
I honestly can't remember if we did anything for her second and it was only 6 months ago! Nope, it's gone...

For ds we went to Wagamama, then had choc cake. No need for a party
