Lost property

DD's school coat reappeared in tutorial yesterday. It has been missing for months. It has her full name and form clearly written on the label. Am I being totally unreasonable to think that in all this time some lazy teacher has had it in the corner of their room and not bothered to return it. (DD helps with lost property, she knows it wasn't handed in).
Yes I know children don't look after their things. DD is dyslexic and scatty, but really does try. She also had a bad time with a boy at primary school hiding her stuff and hoped people weren't being horrid in that way again.

Maybe they thought it was someone elses and not missing?

Unfortunately at school you have to physically search. 9 / 10 times it has gone home on another child.
I've lost count of the number of times I've searched lost property or waited for a child to bring something back.

Teachers are inherently lazy? Fact.
My DD has lost umpteen things this year. It is her dozyness that is the cause, not lazy teachers.
I am spectacularly unimpressed with her and she is in a strop because I wont' buy her a new top with the school name on it. She leaves today.
Teachers, IME, don't want things like coats cluttering up their rooms. They have enough trouble finding space for displays and materials.
My money would back a child taking it home and its parents colluding in it.

I don't think it's a teacher's job to make sure kids look after their things personally (and no, I am not a teacher). The office staff in our school deal with lost property which I think it a better match of skills and resources. Some kids seem particularly prone to losing their stuff which is very frustrating, but I really don't want teachers wasting time when they should be teaching looking for mislaid stuff. Two of my kids are dyslexic, I tell them it's a real bummer but they need to learn to deal with it and if that means trying harder with stuff others find easy so be it.

Some kids are worse at losing things than others, I was also convinced that some mums used to collude. It isn't a teachers job to look after kids clothes.

A touch provocative yes (and I've worked in schools in another life and thought better of being a teacher because I couldn't put up with what they have too).
However, I do wish schools would encourage an ethos of valuing your own and each others belongings.
DD has a hard time with petty bullying without worrying that her stuff may have been stolen or hidden just for fun.
I would just like teachers to remember that pupils get upset and in trouble at home when things go missing.
If you work in a school PLEASE take a moment to return things you will make stressed parents and children

Well I wish my dd's coats (!) that have gone "missing" (read stolen) would bloody well turn up. She "lost" one in year 2 she came out with another child's that was very similar, so I dutifully took it straight back into school. Did the other parent return dd's did she fuck. 2 months ago now in year 3 dd's gorgeous black mack goes "missing" still hasn't turned up. I'm gutted about the mack it was lovely and I was hoping to pass it down to dd2. Both coats had dd's name in them.

You should just be grateful it turned up. I've now resorted to buying cheap horrible coats from Primark for dd to wear at school. They won't get bloody stolen will they!

Your daughter's responsibility I believe, not the teacher's.

I would say, though, that where a school insists on the child requiring expensive uniform items, that they should help the child and the parents hang on to them!

My kids have had so much uniform nicked at school I am seriously unimpressed. I wish the schools would either say, you can get it all from Tesco, or make sure that there is a label check if a kid reports an expensive uniform coat or blazer has gone missing.
