In thinking that this is unfair?

At work we are having a day in July were we are going to a team building day. Everyone has to go and there are about 120 of us in the organisation. There have been t-shirts ordered for us all to wear on this staff day but the largest they ordered is a large which just about fits my size 16 colleague. I am a few sizes (and the rest!!!) bigger than her and there is no way my rolls of bulge will fit into one. I spoke to HR who ordered them to explain my predicament and they said the company they order from only goes up to a large and that i'll just have to wear my own clothes. Now, my colleagues (well, my female ones) are all slender or under a size 16 I would guess by looking at them and I will be the only woman not able to wear a tshirt. There are a few larger male colleagues, but I will feel embarassed at being 'different' than my female co-workers. Is this unfair, or should I shut up and do something about my weight so this doesn't happen in the future?

Can you get something similar made from a print shop, and charge the company?

it is unfair as it does single you out, but from the other side I used to have to organise uniform for staff and you wouldn't believe the lack of sizes they offer people, sometimes the biggest they go to is a 16 but really itwould just about fit a size 14 person. To try to make everyone the same we used to try to buy a top similar from the high street and then get the company to add any logo on for us, they would normally be happy to do this if a large order was placed.

Well, if you are unhappy with your weight then it would be a good idea to try to do something about it.

But re the tshirts. If there are men who are bigger than you, what are they doing for tshirts? could you not have one of those?

Well a lot of the bigger blokes won't fit into these t-shirts either, will they? Unless the company are doing "men's" sizes, in which case get one of those.

Sounds shit to me - what's a 16, a 38 inch chest? How can most blokes fit into that?

TB who works out would need a 44" t-shirt.

By the way I would add that people do not best lose weight when they are feeling self-conscious at work about it.

team building is invariably shit as you are already discovering

i'm not saying it's fair or unfair but that's what i'd do

if you knew the clour of the t-shirt, coule you get somthing done up in your size

Thanks for your replies. Sorry I should've said that the womens t-shirts are v-necked and more of a fitted look and go up to about a size 16 and the mens are loose, round neck normal t-shirts, but they're not even big enough for me as I tried my male friends on, whose is the largest size and they are an inch bigger than the ladies because I measured, so can't even wear the man's version! Think I might have to take the day off as Perry suggested. I wouldn't mind, but after the team building we are going to a spa, all funded by the company, and i'll look ridiculous in my swimming costume next to my model-figure, stick-think colleagues of most of whom think cellulite is a myth!

Just go in your own clothes, see if you can find something to wear that is as similar as possible to what everyone else is wearing.

I'll guarantee that if there are 120 people going, you will not be the only one wearing your own clothes.

Would also suggest getting a v neck t shirt in same colour etc yourself, there are hundreds of internet sites that you would be able to buy from, if it was me I'd rather do this than feel like the odd one out tbh.

I'd agree that out of 120 people, you cant be the only woman not to fit in a size 16, and surely there must be some men in that large number that are about your size?

I don't mean to sound horrible, but if there isn't, then you must be quite large.

It would be a shame for you to have to miss something like this, and I think if your weight is affecting your life to the extent where you are thinking about missing free fun days off work purely because of it, then you probably should start to do something about it. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but you did ask! Smile
