some tory twat on the news just saying that teachers contemplating going on strike are very naughty because they are letting down poor single mothers who depend on schools for their childcare.

The tories aren't know for their care and compassion to single parents (yes parents not just MOTHERS) and isn't it a tad hypocritical to use single parents just to score points aainst the unions.

Just out of curiosity - did you do much protesting during the last government when such harsh restrictions were brought in wrt childcare forcing up costs & constraints for everyone? Or is this just "Tory bashing"?

AlpinePony, it's becoming increasingly clear that the only response a large amount of Tories have to criticism of Dave and his NuBluCrew is to reflexively bang on about the disaster that NuLab eventually became.

This kind of mindless tribal politics is really depressing, if the bar your're setting the coalition is only to be as crap or marginally less crap than NuLabour then you're selling the country short imo.

The stakes are so high right now, we need to look beyond blind party allegiances and hold the government to account on any number of issues, if enough people settle for "well at least Gordon Brown isn't PM any more" then we truly are fucked.

Oh an Alpine. To answer your question yes I did spend almost 2 years fighting some appaling funding decisions made by a devolved goverment here in Wales that directly affected many vulnerable people including a dear friend .

Why not just say "strikes will cause disruption", instead of "think of the poor single mothers" that we have been shafting for years--

Well if it was the interview on R4 this morning, single mothers were not mentioned, whichever Conservative it was actually said that it will make life difficult for all working parents. Which it will. And school is used as childcare by most people.

I think the fucking unions are doing this to score political points, the fucking union leaders are a bunch of rabid socialists who can't see beyond their own little power trips. They want to screw the Coalition, they couldn't give a shit about the current economic climate, the state of the country or the teachers they represent.

OK to clarify, my post at 10.27, the entire sentence was meant to be struck out. And yes I do find it hypocritcal that a Tory minister who's party has contributed hugely to the demonisation of single parent families goes on tv and uses them to try and score political points. (interview was on BBc Breakfast). And I am aware that the whole point of politicians is political point scoring

Those that believe that unions and more importantly their members vote to take strike action on a political point scoring venture are at best misled.

Whilst I accept that life is hard in the private sector, the public sector is demonised by the press and is generally the whipping boy for all our society's ills. DH (public sector funnily enough!) is on a relatively low wage he made that decision many years ago in taking a job with a low wage and lower career progression (dead man's shoes around here) it would be marginally offset by a moderate pension provsion. Why should those goalposts now be changed, are they going to pay back pay for all the years his salary was abated for a better pension provison (not fucking likely!)?

The government are hypocritical twats. If they were to feel the results of their changes to legislation and have the same terms and conditions imposed on their pay and pensions. I would have far more belief that they were actually doing it in the interests of the country rather than as a totally ideological opportunity.

I think anyone who takes a shite job in the hope that they get a good pension 50 years in the future is at best a fool. I think that the public sector is demonised for a reason - private sector employees had to suck up the lack of pension ages ago, when Labour were in power funnily enough, and just after good old Gordon Brown had raided the pension pot. But as it didn't affect the wonderful, hardworking public sector nobody cared. Now that the coffers are bare and savings need to be made you're all bleating about the mean old Tories taking your pensions away. All politicians are hypocrites, none more than fucking hypocritical NuLab, but at least the Tories are attempting to do the right thing.

Public sector workers should look at the private sector (don't mean fat cats) but ordinary people who have had low wages and no pension provision. Women of my age were told that they could draw a state pension at 60, upped to 65 then 66 without any consultation. This might be the only pension people from the private sector have. That's worth a mightly 30K!

We are all suffering, think about next years students and how the coalition have shafted them. Tripling their debt.

However, I do support the strikes, I think that everyone should be protesting as much as possible because if it draws attention to the mess.

If the tories wanted to do the best thing they would leave government and sign a pledge promising never to run as a party ever again
