You can't rip pages out to use in the loo at a Greek campsite (or any other campsite for that matter). Design flaw. They'll never catch on.

You also can't make little flip drawings of dancing stickmen in the corners of the pages :o

CMOTdibbler · 09/06/2011 19:42

You do know you can archive or delete your dirty books off the device before lending it to people don't you ? They just sit in your Amazon account till you put them back.

And the steam doesn't affect it

LowLevelWailing · 09/06/2011 19:59

I love my Kindle, but I hate that the paragraphs aren't properly spaced or indented, and you can't see where there's a line break in the text and the last book I bought had NO PICTURES even though it was a historical biography ...

But I still love it.

slipshodsibyl · 09/06/2011 20:04

Don't rain on my parade. One is winging its way to me now!

MrsMellowDrummer · 09/06/2011 20:05

You can read it in the bath if you put it in a zip-lock plastic bag. Or a map case. Or, one of these crafty devices: www.medgestore.com/products/kindle2-guardian.psp

Genius.

posterofagirl · 09/06/2011 20:07

I read mine in the bath and it's fine. I probably shouldn't though.

pranma · 09/06/2011 20:08

ScarletOHaHa · 09/06/2011 22:04

Love this thread grovel and love my kindle (9 months old)

MumToTheBoy · 09/06/2011 22:13

I got my first kindle as a Christmas present. I was devastated when my ds(5) knelt on it in May and broke the screen. Amazon were fab and sent a replacement kindle (No.2) which came on the Tuesday. On the Thursday (yes two days later) my ds knocked No.2 out of my hands whilst I was at the top of the stairs. After bouncing off every step the screen was completely obliterated. I cried. Then rang Amazon who again immediately sent me yet another replacement kindle (No.3). It arrived on the Saturday. I am now extremely careful about using No.3 when the kindle destroyer is around!! I still love it

anchovies · 09/06/2011 22:19

I bought the fancy ziplock case thingy for mine so I can read it in the shower, it even has a string that you put round your neck so you can just let go to shampoo your hair then pick it up and carry on as you were. Much more useful than your regular paperback.

CleanQueen · 09/06/2011 22:24

They lack personality (if that makes sense). I thoroughly dislike kindles but I suspect I will be dragged kicking and screaming from the dark ages and will end up using one. I will weep for the loss of a good paperback then I will just spend a fortune downloading stuff. Inevitable.

belgo · 10/06/2011 12:40

anchovies I have never once felt the need to read a book in the shower.

mrsmellow · 10/06/2011 12:46

I love my kindle. I thought I'd hate it and that DH was buying me a gift 'for him' (not that there is a history of this, I really wanted a ipod dock despite not having an ipod...) - but I'm overseas and it has been amazing - books are so expensive to buy here.

But there are many downsides as detailed above and when I return to the UK, I plan to return to paperback heaven - especially on greek camping holidays Grin

chocolateyclur · 10/06/2011 13:19

I hate them in theory because I am a "real book" lover (shelves and paperbacks are my wallpaper) but I still secretly want one, because it would make holidays SO much easier - I can read a book and a half easily in a day if I have nothing to do, so a decent amount of holiday reading = a suitcase full of books.

Personally I think amazon should do a deal that if you buy a book from them you can also have the kindle edition for a quid, or something. Then I would buy one instantly.

anon121 · 10/06/2011 13:23

Reading in the shower? Really? Dont you just wash and get out?

Just download calibre to your computer, then plug kindle in, drag and drop all your dirty books and they will be stored on calibre and not show up on the kindle, then you just drag and drop them back onto the kindle when required.Smile problem solved.

I love my kindle by the way but i am abit concerned about the extended warranty you can buy off amazon, does that mean it will break after a year if its not done it before i wonder.

DH wants to take mine with him to the states for 8 days on a business trip, i am loathe to let him incase he loses it or drops it but i did buy it with his money afterall so I guess i'm gonna have to let him

Ambernj1 · 10/06/2011 13:41

DS (18m) stood on mine 2 days ago. Already have a shiney new one free of charge courtesy of Amazon. It will be living on high surfaces henceforth! I love my Kindle - when they bring them out with colour screens my life will be complete!

Atwaroverscrabble · 10/06/2011 17:35

Those of you who have gotten replacements due to accidents did you have the warranty or did amazon just replace them anyway?

mummydoc · 10/06/2011 19:06

i love my kindle for following reasons:

  1. dirty book thing - no none knows what i am reading
  2. very light weight - recent 6 week holiday would have needed 30 odd books
  3. can share dirty books with other people if you wan ti fhtey have kindle . wont elaborate

though i recently tried the kindle read to you function , it was like Stephen hawkings reading me porn....dreadful, i stopped squirming on train and started laughing

LittleMissFlustered · 10/06/2011 19:12

My kindle has no pr0n. Must remedy that...

Hormonalmoaner · 10/06/2011 19:19
