AIBU to hate the term 'the Care Industry'?

'Care industry' suggests factories, production lines, products, something to sell....It doesn't suggest care or warmth or love or humanity. It is an Americanism - like their 'Health industry' - we seem to have just slipped into our vocabulary.

My severely disabled son may soon be a cog in the wheel of the 'care industry' as this government is hell bent on letting the private sector take over. After Panorama, I am now waking up at night, despairing of his future and desperately hoping I will outlive him.

We have had a great tradition of health and social care in this country. If there is money to pay private care homes £3500 a week to abuse vulnerable people and line the pockets of remote, unscrupulous individuals, there is money to pay non-profit making organisations and charities and the good old local authorities to run care homes.

Perhaps we can then stop seeing it as an 'industry'

I agree, I'm a home carer and have just taken some leave my company treat me like a machine, make unreasonable demands and 'care' very little for anyone, luckily I do my job for love and know when I'm out there I am 'caring' in all sense of the word despite the ugly wheel that turns behind me

But the term is realistic. If the goverment wants the private sector to take over then i think it is better to call it what it is becoming - an industry- so we are more alert and against it.

It is the passive acceptance that it is an ok term. When I was nursing in the late 1980's into the 90's, noone used the term 'care industry' and if they did, they would have been slated. Obviously from posting on here, I realise it is of little interest to the general public. Oh well

I think "care industry" is an excellent term. It reminds me that I need to avoid it all costs!

How do you avoid it Bonsoir?

I can see how you avoid getting a job in the care industry, but not how we become dependent on it when we or our loved ones need care

You can avoid large market-based care institutions like nurseries and old people's homes and children's holiday camps and use small, private providers with whom you have a personal relationship instead.
