Aibu to take drastic action against socks? Or rather, lonely socks?

After every wash, there is at least ONE unpaired sock. I leave it on the side. By the end of the month, the one lone sock is kept company by at least 5-6 other equally unpaired socks. Where do they all go?

Aibu to do a formal "Throw Away Sunday" the first sunday of every month?

My ex had a habit of stuffing handfuls of odd socks in the washing machine because he couldn't be arsed to sort them out into pairs before a wash. Before long, ALL of his songs were unpaired as well as most of mine and the DCs.

I solved it by taking his odd socks out at the end of the wash cycle and putting them back in the wash. He ended up with no clean socks. He moaned. I told him he'd do things my way and fucking like it - otherwise - no clean socks.

They learn. And nobody got hurt.

You have time in which to prioritise this as an activity? YABU. Pour yourself a G and T instead on sock sunday and drink it in tribute to the lost socks.

p.s. ours don't get lost, but de-paired and holey (my husband's, instantly. Particularly when required to take off his shoes at the airport or at his mum's)

I had a spring clean clear out of a chest of drawers last year and found 23 (yes twenty three) odd socks. I have absolutely no clue how I ever had that many socks, let alone lost them all as well!

I am a man and always buy the same type of plain black sock at the same shop. None of them are odd. When they start to get worn out I buy another batch.

Dh buys the socks from M&S with differently coloured heals and toes, so they are easy to pair. Not his sports socks, though...

identical socks become nonidentical if they are washed different numbers of times (get greyer) or, if pale, are washed with something darker or a different colour. I reckon you need a good big heap of them so you can have a sock-wash.

I didn't get married immediately after living with my mum, so I am quite capable of looking after myself and my socks. My dad taught me to iron shirts when I was 14.

The answer to this is very simple. Ditch every single sock from current stock. Buy in an industrial shitload of socks from Primark - same size, colour, type. Replace. Toss them at the first sign of wear and replace - and lob odd ones in the bin. At Primark prices you can afford to do this and your sanity will be saved.

Which is why, I hooked up with dh, when I was 20. He had been living on his own since he was 18 though, so capable of washing and ironing. I dont ever touch his ironing, he does it better than me.

But I am queen of laundry, and he is the king of the dishwasher.

And as for the socks being washed uneven number of times, I would say that each pair usually come off our feet at the same time, so end up in the same wash, so is washed exactly the same number of times as its "mate", before they are paired again after each wash. But not socks from Next. They change shape as well as colour....

My identical socks become, not just another shade, but the elasticated tops change their length too Some of them become an entirely different size and shape as well.

dh has been buying M&S freshfeet socks in black for the last 7-8 years. He bins holes each pairing session and matches according to shade.

I am not obsessing over mens socks, those are not the socks that get lost in our house. That is a problem solely confined to our kids. I am beginning to wonder if they take the socks off on the way from school, and throw just ONE in the river, just to rile me.....

I have an odd sock bag. At every wash all the odd socks go in. Then I go through it when I can be arsed.

We had "sock amnesty week" when all the family could put their odd socks in a bag which was pinned up on the back of the front door. The plan was that at the end of the week we'd sort out all the socks and return them to their rightful owner. Problem was that our friends came round and put their odd socks in our amnesty bag. They thought it was a good joke, but I now have more single sock than I started with

Single socks means you have fairies. Fairies sleep in socks using them as sleeping bags. However, fairies are vain creatures and cannot possibly sleep in the same sleeping bag as any other fairy - hence the amount of odd socks.

It would appear from empirical evidence that fairies like men and move into your house at the same time men do.

I create DH's odd sock collection by throwing individual socks with holes in as I find them. It amazes me how quickly he wears them out - you would think he had clawed feet.
He is quite old enough to match them into pairs if he wants both feet to match.

This needs to be the latest mumsnet campaign.
