5 year olds are interested in all sorts of things. It's not as if it will prevent him learning how to ride a bike...

Maybe you will have to teach him to ride his bike.

donki this was lighthearted. DH says he likes you. I'm sure DS1 wasn't very interested in convex hulls but tolerated it with fortitude.

Convex is only the opposite of concave. Its a basic shape. Good thinking to give an example of a ship to help him with it.

The thing is, if you're a child of one or more mathematicians, you'll pick up this stuff anyway. What you need is to be hothoused in social and sporting skills, then you'll have some chance of turning out normal :) He already knows more infinite arithmetic than he's been taught finite arithmetic at school and he confuses his friends by proving to them how infinity seconds is actually the same as infinity hours.

Bike skills needed I think. And football.

Will your DH be setting DS1 a test on them later? Because that would be a little unreasonable...

YABU, if your DH is telling him about convex hulls in an exciting and interesting way, then its brilliant, im frankly skeptical as to how this can be portrayed as exciting but im just a lowly biologist. Seriously, if your DH is as passionate about mathematics as he seems then this will rub off on your DS and he has a whole plethora (sp) of joy ahead of him. I wish someone would have inspired me about maths at such a young age then i would have learnt to love it and not be afraid of it, because i suspect that actually, its at the heart of most things.

My DS1 is an unstoppable questioner and techno-head. You can't say anything without him picking you up on a word he doesn't understand, I was trying to explain "reverberate" on the way to swimming today. Convex hulls would have been right up his street I'm pretty sure we've done aerofoils.

How can something convex be 2-dimensional? Genuinely interested. Please get your DH to explain.

Have I got this right? You hammer a load of nails into a table in a random pattern. You stretch an elastic band around the nails so it surrounds the group tightly. The shape of the band is a 2d convex hull. It is the smallest shape that contains all the points but it doesn't go in anywhere i.e. it is always convex (or straight line).
