I am slightly suprised at the amount of reference to Class, on MN. So I was just wondering, what determines ones class?.

Well. I don't know what I am then, having read this thread. My dad's parents were immigrant Irish to Glasgow and then later Coventry. My mum's parents are (still alive) a retired doctor (Granny) and partner in firm of accountants. My mum and dad met at church youth group.

My dad went to Oxford university and is a secondary (independent) school teacher. My mum was a nurse and then HV til she retired last year.

My brothers and I went to independent schools. I am a primary school teacher, with very good GCSEs, "A" levels and undergrad degree in English and Spanish from a red brick uni. One brother is a university lecturer with a first class degree and d.Phil from the same college as my dad. Another is a (reformed) criminal, who has spent time in prison and now teaches TEFL abroad.

My partner's parents are, in his dad's case, a market trader, warehouseman, window cleaner and other jobs, his mum a SAHM/cleaner. My partner got a better degree than me from a better university, from a comprehensive, and is also a teacher. His brother is a plumber, and his sister a care home worker.

No idea where we all fit in!

Well according to the Wiki definition, we are MC, though we are both from very humble backgrounds. On the other hand, I know some very rich people and some very poor people. I don't really give a stuff.

CRS Love your post - just goes to show what nonsense all this 'class' business is and how diverse families really are.
