i couldnt watch all the way through. i like meat. i enjoy eating meat, as do my family, so i wouldn't be going vegan/vegetarian but the actions taken in that video were barbaric. How the hell can you ensure your meat wasn't in pain prior to being killed :(

LadyOfTheManor · 24/05/2011 12:00

I like meat too much for it to affect me.

I have my own chickens and pigs and live in the knowledge that my chicken, eggs and pork come from a great source. I try and buy organic and usually buy from my local farm shop, but people insist on wanting cheap meat, and this is the extent gone to to provide it.

ImeldaM · 24/05/2011 12:14

How horrible, had to stop watching halfway through, that is absolutely awful. I am definately going to change shopping habits.

StellaSays · 24/05/2011 17:05

I agree it is awful, however PETA are known for being a little crazy wrong about things at times. I would be wary of the stats they are quoting e.g. about the stun guns not working, I don't know the stats but I suspect they arn't as bad as PETA would claim. Also the kicking from the stunned animals does not necissarily mean they are awake and feeling pain. It is often just random nerves firing due to the stunning.

It is also illegal to treat pigs like that in Britain so I go out of my way to never buy pork from outside the UK. As long as you are careful when reading labels you will not be buying meat that has been treated like that.

Be aware however of ritually slaughtered meat, the animals ARE awake and do feel pain whatever the apologists say about it being 'kinder'. Many places just use halal/kosher meat without labels like in Subway. Be prepared to ask about the meat if you are in doubt.

gremlindolphin · 24/05/2011 17:09

well done for posting this.

ImeldaM · 24/05/2011 17:26

Stella link here seems to show same. I know Animal Aid are similar to PETA but with reporting of prosecutions & slaughterhouses being closed I do take it seriously.

Apologies that its DM but was googling 'cruelty-free meat' after looking at link on this thread. I would be keen to go veggie but DP & DS very unlikely so wanted to check out best shopping options after this thread.

RunAwayWife · 24/05/2011 17:28

I eat meat, but that is barbaric,

kw1986 · 24/05/2011 17:35

I've watched that before. If I remember correctly its what tipped me over the edge and made me decide to be vegetarian. I remember feeling sick and very sad watching it but forcing myself to watch it, no point sticking my head in the sand.

Its a horrible, horrible video to watch, but does send a very clear message.

motherchuffer · 24/05/2011 18:14

StellaSays - What is halal/kosher meat ?

OP posts:
StellaSays · 24/05/2011 18:24

ritually slaughtered meat is when they cut the throat of an animal without stunning it first. This is to make absolutly sure that the animal is alive when its throat is cut.

This practise is called halal for Muslims and kosher for Jews. It is meat that they are allowed to eat because it has been slaughtered in this way.

Its all to do with the food laws found in Leviticus.

Vallhala · 24/05/2011 18:33

YANBU, not in the least. I haven't watched the footage and won't be, having seen enough like it already. It's preaching to the converted in this house (I'm vegan, the children lifelong vegetarians) and to me, the killing in itself is as dreadful as the manner of the murder.

RunAwayWife · 24/05/2011 19:22

Halal is very very cruel practise

LadyOfTheManor · 24/05/2011 21:23

They drain the blood and they bless the meat in a way which is cleansing for whichever culture/religion dictates.
