shouldnt we as a country become more self sufficient and produce more of our food and pay a little bit more for quality instead of driving our farmers out of business and importing cheap lower quality food which will go up in price as other nations become richer and are willing to pay more for it

Yes but supply is driven by demand. People WANT cheap food. People are growing some of their own and buying local and in season when they can. But it is an expensive option.
