to think the english language is very confusing

my ds has learning difficulties and speech problems, he cannot get his head around the leters y and w when I say y he wants to put a w because why starts wuth a w when I say w he wants to put u u ,I can totally see his logic.

When you get to words with multiple spellings such as there where weather etc it goes totally out of the window as it does with silent letter words know knife etc etc

its so flippin complicated,why cant we just do everything phonetically

well.... at school they are taught using phonics, so why don't you do that with hm?

hes 10 we did jolly phonics at infants but hes heading to secondry nest september, heaven help him

his spelling is awful bless him totally phonic but not correct english, we are working now with the ace dictionary for dyslexics which is phonically based.

It really is tough going for him.Or as he woul say "tuff goin"

Oh my goodness it is sooooo confusing! I feel for him and for you trying to help him.

Some things in English defy logic and have to be learned by rote eg even words like "the" are not spelled phonically and just have to ne memorised.

Ghoti - fish. GH as in cough, o as in women and ti as in caution.

I usually try and make up rhymes or mnemonics for words I find difficult. I'm not dyslexic, but I struggle with some stuff, especially as I post on boards based on both sides of the Atlantic with different spelling rules. Perhaps you can encourage your son to make up his own 'sayings' so that he can engage with it and take some ownership.

The answer is there isn't much logic to English
at best you can learb the guidlines and hope for spellcheck
but even spellcheck doesn't work if you have a word pselt correctly but its the wrong word for the situation
