Car insurance renewal due in June. Been using search sites and individual sites. The cheapest quote I can get is £50 more expensive than I have just paid - with 1 more year no claims. Shock Most are £50-200 more expensive like for like.

This happened last year when my then insurance company quoted me £143 more expensive than previous year. They would not/ could not lower it so switched to current company. I am still awaiting my quote from that company for this year.

I don't expect it to go down anymore as it is I haven't paid much this year - but to go up?

AIBU to think this is basically shocking? And to ask how much other MN are paying for a year fully comp?

Like anything else, insurance has gone up.

Thank all those ads on the tv saying "had an accident? make a claim"....

heliumballoons · 13/05/2011 22:35

Is that why?

I was really puzzled as to how a woman whos had a licence 12 years, 4 years no claims, (didn't own car before this) could suddenly become a greater risk.

They actually want to charge me as much as my old banger car is worth. Shock

My car insurance is £150 less than the car cost me, insurance has gone up.

HalfPastWine · 13/05/2011 22:37

Car insurance premiums have shot up this year. You've got off lightly with a £50 increase imo, my insurance went from £650 to £1700 this year with my insurer and that's with no claims and an extra year's no claim protection. I ended up moving to another insurer and paying £900. I only drive a bloody Ford Fiesta!!!

Reasons given by my insurance company for the increase:

  1. The amount of claims made during the snow last year.
  2. Scams - gangs going into the back of other cars and making multiple claims.
  3. Immigrants coming into the country and fiddling the system (some scam to do with postcodes apparently)

My response to them was that they need to get a more rigorous system in place then in order to stop people abusing the system rather than sting us for higher premiums.

It's daylight robbery if you ask me!

trixymalixy · 13/05/2011 22:38

Helium, insurance companies made huge losses on car insurance in the past couple of years, mainly due to car insurance fraud, so insurance premiums have gone up a lot.

MoreBeta · 13/05/2011 22:41

Also, I heard there has been a reduction of capital available in the insurance industry to underwrite risk so that has caused wholesale reinsurance rates to rise.

ohmyfucksy · 13/05/2011 22:46

I know, it is very annoying

But you have to remember that insurance payouts don't just cover damage to cars, but damage to people - which can be much more expensive.

LordOfTheFlies · 13/05/2011 22:49

They've really got us motorists by the short'n'curlies. My insurance is due soon, and I've been browsing and phoning.Decided to stick with Co=operative because when you go like-for-like and add on all the extras (legal cover, breakdown, key replacement) those 'deals' don't seem so attractive.
Mines about £480 for a 1.8 litre Nissan.I riled because I'm classed as low risk but still get financially pummelled.Don't want to go with a company I've never heard of because I don't know if they'll be around in 6 months.
Did have Insurance with the 'red telephone'one from 1993 to 2007 then when I had a no fault write off I had mega problems. Fine to take the money until I needed themAngry

heliumballoons · 13/05/2011 22:50

I was joking a bit about value and insurance.

I have a 13 year old KA. Last year paid £200 for year fully comp. Cheapest I can get this year is £243 with free spa voucher. Grin

I put car value as £500 but valuation by garages is about £345.

Before Last year my insurance company charged me £240 and then wanted £383 for like cover. Offered me £379 as cheapest. So I was lucky to get one for £200 then.

Think I'll have to accept the cheapest one I could find on search engine, along with the rise in petrol and hope the spa voucher can be used locally and go and recover there. Grin

ohmyfucksy · 13/05/2011 22:52

Mine is the same car as yours, bit newer - 360 fully comp, I think

I have 6 years no claims bonus

LordOfTheFlies · 13/05/2011 23:07

I've noticed none of the ones I've looked have any freebies.Last year one had a £75 cashback-can't remember who.Sainsbo and Tesco give loyalty card points.I was hoping for a wedge of M&S vouchers but theirs is £660 for me + breakdown!

cuckooclock · 13/05/2011 23:42

Hubby got his renewal through earlier this year and it was up about 350 on last year. He phoned them up and asked why it had gone up and they agreed it was a bit too much and gave him a quote for less than last year! Worth a try?

redexpat · 13/05/2011 23:55

Assuming that you are female, it's probably going up because the EU has ruled that different rates for men and women amounted to discrimination. Also there has been a massive increase in crash-for-cash (or is it the other way around?) cases. I know that won't help you find a better quote, but sometimes it helps to have background info.

LordOfTheFlies · 14/05/2011 00:14

Many, many, many years ago I had a 1.2 Vauxhall Nova ( about 2 year old from new) and my ins went from £240 to £360. ie 50%. When I spat the dummy queried, I was told "Oh they're popular to steal these hot hatches!!" Hot Hatch? Its a 1.2l Nova, barely tepid. Crap reason ,didn't get my renewal.

Goodynuff · 14/05/2011 01:50

I pay 100$/month for a 2 year old dodge caravan Sad That is full coverage, for myself and my DH, never any claims

heliumballoons · 14/05/2011 14:41

I got my letter today from current insurer. Gone from £200 this year to £373 for coming year. Shock I'll be ringing and asking them exactly why. And if they can't beat my cheapest quote I'll change again!!

OP posts:
heliumballoons · 14/05/2011 14:44

I have just noticed as well they want to charge me £10 on top of this as a renewal fee - as if they are doing me a favour. Hmm

OP posts:
trixymalixy · 14/05/2011 14:49

A £10 charge for your loyalty?!? I would tell them to get stuffed with that one!

heliumballoons · 14/05/2011 15:36

I just did. Blush Grin

Rang up to ask why it was so much, to tell them of the best quote I had and that that included courtesy car which they wanted me to pay extra for. The guy on the phone said all insurance has gone up and theirs has gone up 30-40% on average. I told him the like for like quote I had compared to the previous year had gone up 50% and they wanted me to pay for renewing. I said since when were service providers doing customers a favour and charging on top of paying for the service provided?

He didn't even ask what my cheapest quote was or offer to attempt to look at it. Angry

Guess I'll be insuring elsewhere then this year. Grin

minibmw2010 · 14/05/2011 17:03

I think all insurance has gone up (especially for women) this year due to the EU ruling about how lower rates for safer women driver was discrimination against men. Instead of bringing the men's down to meet the ladies (sensible to me) they are, of course, bringing the ladies up to meet the men (good for their bank account accounts, not ours).

trixymalixy · 14/05/2011 17:19

That equality ruling doesn't come into force until 2012, sorry car insurance is going to get more expensive still for women.

HerHissyness · 14/05/2011 17:45

The increase in insurance for women won't hit until the end of NEXT year, according to churchill. that is when the insurance companies, by law, must pass on the rises.

Talk about sex discrimination against women! When men ARE a worse risk to insure, they ought to pay more.

We need to march in the streets on this one. This EU thing needs to be legally challenged.

heliumballoons · 14/05/2011 19:24

and I worked out £200 - £382 for like to like is actually 90% rise not 50%. Pretty rubbish when they told me their average increase is 30-40%. Hmm
