to shut my neighbour's gate?

I have a right of way across the neighbour's garden to the gate, which leads to the access alley.

When neighbour goes out, she leaves the gate swinging in the wind, and it bangs away all day. At the weekend, DP got fed up and went through her garden to shut gate. I've just done the same today, but have been seized by a hideous qualm!

AIBU to shut her gate?

(Not sure if it makes any difference, but she's a tenant and the banging is knocking the screws out of the catch.)

You have right of way, what's the difference between crossing her garden to go through the gate, or crossing her garden to close it? I don't see an issue.

If it was me and I could close it by not going through her garden (going up the path the other way say) I would do that instead. It just feels weird being on someone else's property.

Well that's reassuring.

But it dawned on me that, if it were a gate I didn't use, I'd be being a bit officious closing the bugger. Even if it annoyed me.

I shut my neighbour's gate (with a loud slam) as they often leave it blowing in the wind. And it is THEIR gate, not mine!

Mine doesn't bang as it's a heavy metal gate, but people being helpful by shutting it is driving me mad at the minute. I'm on crutches with SPD and it's a real hassle to open and close it. It's just postmen, visitors etc. doing it at the minute, but if someone went out of their way to make leaving my house less convenient for me I'd not be pleased! (If it was banging I would close it myself BTW).

Thank you all. Shall close and bolt the bugger with a good conscience. And point and say, "They told me," if there's bother!
