basically the vauxhall corsa we have as courtesy car has been keyed..bastards!
happened when it was parked outside one of dd's friends
two long marks down one side
there is a £400 excess on the car Shock

shall I try and get it fixed before it goes back
will it be cheaper than £400

If they have gone through all the paint, I suspect it will be more than £400 :(

Get a quote though

HalfPastWine · 03/05/2011 14:01

Yes, if you can get it done cheaper then definitely try it.

And yes, they are BASTARDS who did it. I know exactly how you feel !

ggirl · 03/05/2011 14:04

HalfPastWine · 03/05/2011 14:07

Probably not ggirl but then I tend to risk these things!

ggirl · 03/05/2011 14:13

just seems so bloody unfair
first some old blind git reverses into our parked car

Maybe go back to where you where parked when the car got keyed and phone police and get a incident number
not sure but it might reduce the cost at the hire pace

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 03/05/2011 14:18

Why the hell do these twats do things like key people's cars? This pees me off so much .... calling them bastards is not enough! I would love to find out who does this then go round their houses and repay the favour ten fold!

Good luck!

If the damage is not your fault you can argue against the charges.

Dp had a crash and his car was written off. the only car they could offer him as a courtesy car was some brand spanking new top of the range BMW.

First week we had it someone scratched the bonnet. It was obviously a malicious act as it was a perfect smiley face on teh top of the bonet.
We contacted the police who logged it and gave us an incident number.

We then filed forms with the hire company. They waved the damages and claimed from their own insurers. We had to argue with them a bit as they originally wanted to charge us, but as it was through no fault of our own we fought it.

We have not had to pay.

candle wax matching car paint colour, softened

Mamaz0n · 03/05/2011 19:25

herhissyness - do tell more. I have a luvverly scratch on my passenger door from a car park i need to sort out

SoundTheOctoalert · 03/05/2011 20:07

My car was badly keyed from one end to the other. Our local valet place (you know, in the pub carpark!) buffed it for me for £30 and the scratch disappeared. Worth a shot, I'd say.

zedfaca · 03/05/2011 20:07

Who did you rent it with? I don't work the in customer services dept but I know a bit about this as I work in car rental. If the damage has occurred while on rent to you then you're responsible for it unfortunately. You won't be charged your full excess but you will be charged for the value of the damage. Which will be tallied up to an extortionate rate. So yes, it would be cheaper to have it fixed yourself but if they do a botch job, you're liable for that too. Also if your rental goes overdue because you can't return the car on time, you'll be charged an excessive daily rate. It's total bollocks for you and I'm really sorry. The only thing I can say to make you feel any better is that it will cost you no more than if this had happened to your own car. Oh and before you return the car, take photos of it in, take photos of the fuel gauge and keep the receipt for the fuel! That way you have evidence if there's any more problems. I'd strongly suggest paying a damage waiver next time too because these companies take the piss.

Get a crayon/candle that matches the colour of the paint, You need to scrape the crayon across the scratch not along it. By scraping across it you are leaving wax in the scratch. You will need to do this a few times to build up the scratch. If you wait 10 minutes between applications you will find that the wax hardens a little. After you have done this a few times it is time to polish over the scratch. You will find that as you polish the wax in the scratch will blend with the surrounding area.

I did this on X's car when it got keyed in Tesco's, it worked. Not an end to ten key attack and not down to metal, but a good attempt.

getting it buffed with a light bit of T-cut will do wonders too.

HerHissyness · 03/05/2011 20:45

end to end*

Mamaz0n · 03/05/2011 20:53

ooh will give that a go, my car is black so easier to match than some others too.

cheers.

HerHissyness · 03/05/2011 20:57

It's worth a try mamazon, as you say, black is easy! kohl pencil even at a pinch!

I do have to confess to using the french manicure white nail varnish to touch up the scrape on a fridge in the last house, and toothpaste (white of course) does a great job as a wall filler. Grin

Mamaz0n · 03/05/2011 21:04

you need your own show! Grin

chunkythighs · 03/05/2011 21:07

I had a rental that was keyed when I was in Spain was really Angry as I was obsessive about not getting it scratched. My pristine rental was returned with scratch down to the metal along the entire length of the car........never heard another thing about it....Grin

ggirl · 03/05/2011 21:56

ooh that's hopeful chunkythighs
zedfaca-the credit company is called ccl or summat can't remember off hand
we had to go through them because dd is 19 and needed to drive the car as well and usual hire co don't allow young drivers
don't know whether to call them and tell them or not
anywya my car won't be fixed until next week so atleast have time for a quote
