Potty training etiquette?

When potty training, is this ok?

Enter a room with thirty other children and adults, take loose potty (not in a carrier bag) with you.

Ask toddler if they need a wee. Pull down their pants, sit them on potty in centre of the room. Toddler not desperate to go (doesn't, in fact, go at all).

Toilets literally outside the door of the room. Parent has no other children to keep an eye on.

Genuine question - a friend told me this scenario and I haven't yet got to the potty training stage yet!

I'd have done it in the toilets not in front of a room full of people.

Imo (and I fully appreciate that other people have different ideas) if a child cannot wait say 30 seconds for you to place the potty in a discreet corner (or preferably in a toilet area if available) then that child is not really ready for potty training.

I preferred it if my dcs could wait slightly longer (literally a minute or two, I'm not suggesting hours!) before we ventured out and about. That way we could go out in the car, visit the library/cafe etc without inconveniencing other people out and about by plonking a potty wherever we felt entitled to. (oh and always in a bag too)

Would probably have tried to do it in a discreet corner rather than the middle but wouldn't get too upset either way

That is silly. The child had not indicated a need to use the potty, there was no rush. Was the child holding his/her crutch or showing other signs of needing to go.

My little girl says "potty potty quick quick" when she wants to go and I have two seconds to get her on a potty. She also holds her crutch. DD is in cloth pull ups as her ablity to hold on to wee is not strong enough.

In that position I woud take her to the toilet or least use the potty in the corridor if the toilet was occupied. Today in church dd used the potty outside the toilet as the toilet was in use. It was pretty private though and not in full view of anyone.

I would have taken them to the loo or at the very least to a quiet corner. I did find it very stressful though and lived in fear of accidents in a public place. Also as a parent you can often spot the signs that they need to go and sometimes need to act quickly!

That's pretty yak, imo.

I can understand if there's a desperate need but even then maybe rush to just outside the door.

For me, it's not so much a modesty thing as I don't think toddlers care, and rightly so. But open receptacles of bodily fluids? And carrying a used potty around without putting it in something. No.

But then I am anal about this stuff. Hated people stiking out toddler group changing nappies in the baby area instead of taking them to the toilet.

Actually just remembered I had a friend who used to do this. Middle of statbucks/ELC/the library, anywhere!
