I mean really clean. Not just tidy and wipe up. I have a cleaner once a week. She basically hoovers and mops downstairs (lounge, kitchen, toilet, hallway). Hoovers stairs and cleans upstairs bathroom as well as moping upstairs landing/hallway.

About once a month I give ours and DDs bedroom a really good clean. Chairs, washing baskets, toy boxs out. Sweep mop floor, behind drawers etc, clean windows and window sills etc etc. I change bedsheets once a week.

To be honest I just can't be arsed to do any more after all the washing, cooking, dishwasher loading, mumsneting, picking up of toys, mumsneting, ironing (occasional).

Me and DD go out for lunch or to the park or for a walk everyday. And I work some weekends in a job I adore and I also cook from scratch.

MIL makes a point of saying I don't do enough, the other day me a SIL were saying how we had been to the same park everyday for a week, and MIL said that it is easy for B4beatrice to go out as she doesn't like housework.

Am I really that gross? Does my house need that cleaner woman off the TV??

Fuckin ell ! Thats LOADS of cleaning. I might do that behind furniture
thing once a year or if we move house. I too have a cleaner, and would rather pay her to do it and spend that time with the children.

Newgolddream · 13/04/2011 15:26

I rarely clean, although I do keep my kitchen work surfaces clean. I am probably really untidy by your standards, I work ful time but since I have a DH who is a SAHD and is ocd about cleaning I dont need to Grin

OnEdge · 13/04/2011 15:27

Your MIL is a saddo if she does house work for pleasure.

I pay my MIL to do mine Grin perfect solution all round.

sprinkles77 · 13/04/2011 15:29

You as much as I do. And I'm accused of being a neat freak. More a reflection of the MIL than you.

ChasingSquirrels · 13/04/2011 15:30

I have a cleaner who hoovers and mops, does the kitchen & utility surfaces and sinks, does the bathroom toilets & sinks and wipes the surfaces & windowsills in the conservatory, lounge & bedrooms - so much the same as the OP's by the sounds of it.

I very very rarely do anything extra, other than wiping down kitchen surfaces after cooking and kitchen table after meals (sometimes).

I haven't done any for about 2 weeks. it is mnging in here. WILL DO IT TONIGHTAND TOMORROW! Have a visitor tomorrow afternoon.

GGGrrrr get into it.

I used to feel such a failure if my house wasn't clean as well as everythi8ng else to feel a big fat failure for. Now i still feel guilty but not so much a failure. Nobody ever comes here anyway really.

LaWeasel · 13/04/2011 15:33

That's more than me, and I was cleaning front door the other day because I was bored!

Meglet · 13/04/2011 15:33

hardly ever. But my house is still pretty presentable.

As for cleaning behind things (once every 6 months) and sorting out toys (every other month at most).

Life's too short to be obsessive about housework IMO.

LaWeasel · 13/04/2011 15:37

I'm on here every day anyway!

I need to get my arse out the door and meet people really, just haven't geared up to it yet.

YouaretooniceNOT · 13/04/2011 15:37

You and me both!!! LaWeasel

B4Beatrice · 13/04/2011 15:39

Ladybird- i like your style! Maybe I should adopt this approach!
My house isn't always spotless but it's pretty neat and tidy.

MIL is what I would call a professional housewife. I, on the other hand, am an average amateur!

NEVER

The cleaner cleans once a week, I certainly don't do any other cleaning- other than wiping surfaces after preparing meals. That would be like having a dog and barking yourself.

Most weeks, I do the bathroom and shower room, shove the vacuum cleaner round, dust the obvious surfaces, and sweep/mop the kitchen floor. Some weeks I don't....

And I keep the kitchen surfaces clean as I go, or wipe them over when I've got rid of the dishes into the machine.

Your MIL is extreme if she thinks you aren't doing enough.

agedknees · 13/04/2011 16:23

Take it from a clean freak (or so my family say), you are doing loads. Your mil needs to get out more.

Zimm · 13/04/2011 16:23

Eermmmm Cleaner comes once a fortnight and does bathroom, toilet, kitchen, hoovering etc. I do kitchen surfaces every day and the odd wipe over the bathroom. (As well as laundry, dishes, cooking etc). I sometimes tidy. I am a slob. i clean DD's highchair after every meal though and her toys have been washed ooooo at least once since she's been born (8 months..)

Ragwort · 13/04/2011 16:27

Giddy - you clean behind curtain rails fortnightly? I don't think I've ever even thought about cleaning behind curtain rails Grin.

I am clearly a complete slut by mumsnet standards so I won't even tell you how infrequently I clean.

BeaMoaning · 13/04/2011 16:30

I clean the kitchen and bathroom everyday.

Kitchen floor gets done most days too.

Kids have to do their own rooms but if I'm in the mood (about once a month) I will give them a blitz.

If I wake up in a cleaning mood I do loads if I can't be bothered or have loads of other stuff to do I just do the bare minimum to keep on top of it.

PatTheHammer · 13/04/2011 16:34

I would so love a cleaner because I detest hoovering, especially stairs and we live in a townhouse.

how much do you ladies pay? We are not flush with cash but I may be getting a new job soon which would mean no petrol cost per week so I could maybe use the money spent on that to pay cleaner.

I think you do lots OP, I hoover the downstairs twice a week and mop kitchen and utility when needed, usually fortnightly. Upstairs gets done weekly (sometimes). I dust when we have visitors. Bathrooms and loos get wiped regularly but only 'cleaned' properly at weekends. I change the kids sheets weekly and ours fortnightly. My mum thinks I'm a slob and she is probably right but I clean the kitchen sink/surfaces/cooker everyday after meals and the bulk of my time is spent doing WASHING!

P.s I have lived here 18 months and cleaned the oven twice............Is that minging??Blush

ExitPursuedByALamb · 13/04/2011 16:34

People clean the inside of cupboards! Why?

I would probably get the slattern award.

If we have people coming I might do a bit of a blitz, but I never clean under, behind or inside anything (except the bathroom)

bonkers20 · 13/04/2011 16:36

Actual cleaning rather than cleaning up...OK, kitchen - just the basics every day, floor gets swept almost daily and washed once a week (wiped every 5 mins daily though).
Bathroom - once a week
Windows - we have a window cleaner who comes every 6 weeks or so. I will clean the inside ones now and again.
Hoover - one a week.
Curtains - never
Carpet shampooed - in 5 years it's had one professional clean. Due for another one.
Furniture - dusting usually once a week in the lounge, but it might just be bits you can see. Some bedroom furniture gets hoovered (including the lamp shades) if I can be bothered.
DSs bed room - last had a deep clean in Sept when he got a new bed. I sometimes go in there and fling things about in horror, but these days it's usually a case of throwing everything on the bed so I can at least run the hoover round.
Top of the door frames - once in about 15 years.
Mirrors - about every fortnight.
The kitchen cupboards have been cleared our twice in 15 years (once when I was just about have DS1 and the other time when I was just about to have DS2). They aren't too bad though as we are not cluttery people.
