How much should I have been charged?

I was in M&S this morning and wanted to buy some vests for DD. I found a packet I liked. It should have been a pack of 5 but 2 vests were missing.

I took them to the checkout and asked for a reduction because of the two missing vests. The lady on the checkout called the manager who agreed to reduce them for me but we couldn't agree on what price they should be reduced to. He thought it shold have been higher than the amount I suggested

It was orignally a pack of 5 vest for £5 and two were missing. Interested to know what you think I should have been charged??

£3

WalterFlipschicks · 13/04/2011 13:45

£3

Jaydles · 13/04/2011 13:45

I would guess £3, that makes a £1 each like the original 5 for £5

nickelbaalamb · 13/04/2011 13:45

yep, I say £3 too.

gapbear · 13/04/2011 13:45

£3

What did you suggest?

kreecherlivesupstairs · 13/04/2011 13:45

Three pounds obviously. They are a pound a vest or am I missing the vital maths part of my brain?

stealthcat · 13/04/2011 13:46

£3

Itsjustafleshwound · 13/04/2011 13:46

£3 - but then things aren't always that simple ....

angel1976 · 13/04/2011 13:46

£3? Surely if it's 5 for a fiver, then it's 1 for a £1 each? Surely life is that simple sometimes? Grin

BucketOfSoldiers · 13/04/2011 13:46

Well usually it's 10% ish off for faulty products where the 'fault' can be rectified ie a make up mark. At least it was where i used to work.

MarthaMayBeMad · 13/04/2011 13:47

I said 3 pounds, he said £3.75 Hmm he just couldn't get it. I nearly suggested he went back to school to work on his maths

Blimey, what a plonker!

Itsjustafleshwound · 13/04/2011 13:48

It is never so simple, is it?

MarthaMayBeMad · 13/04/2011 13:51

He was quite determined I was wrong. Even though a couple of ladies behing me in the queue were saying I was right too. In his defence he was about 9 years old and clearly just playing at being manager for the day Grin

Bless him. So did you get them for £3 after showing him your working out?

larrygrylls · 13/04/2011 13:55

Umm, you never ever seen a BOGOF offer. Generally, there are economies of scale. You cannot just divide the price of something offered in bulk and assume that is the price of a single item.

Also, call me suspicious but maybe the OP only wanted 3 vests so took two out and asked for a discount. Surely, if not, she would have bought another pack of 5?!

TitsMcGee89 · 13/04/2011 14:09

Maybe there was only that pack left in her size/colour she wanted.

schooltripworry · 13/04/2011 14:11

They should be grateful someone wanted to buy the pack at all and given them to you for £2.50. It was hardly in resellable condition.

And it is a bit much to suspect the OP of damaging the pack and taking 2 out. Presumably they had no more of that size in stock or she would have bought a pack for £5. I often find I am lucky if there is even one pack in the size I want.

ShatnersBassoon · 13/04/2011 14:12

Give over, Larry. People who do things like that don't go in M&S.

YouaretooniceNOT · 13/04/2011 14:13

If the amount was an exact £5, the price should have been reduced to £3 at the very most.

larrygrylls i doubt the OP took the vests out of the packet and placed it in her shopping bag...did cross my mind too btw! lol

TitsMcGee89 · 13/04/2011 14:14

I once got a discount for a hole in some trousers I wanted from topshop, they were the only ones left in my size and I needed them for work. And no Larry, I didnt make the hole myself.

Quenelle · 13/04/2011 14:18

Completely agree with schooltripworry.

You didn't pay the £3.75 did you OP?

GelflinGirl · 13/04/2011 14:24

well............ did you pay £3.75? or tell him to stuff it (hope the latter)

iskra · 13/04/2011 14:30

our M&S NEVER has complete packs of knickers/vests etc. Really winds me up.

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 13/04/2011 14:32

Agree. £3. 5 divided by 5 times 3.

It's not difficult maths. Your average chimp could do it!
