Toast Toppings

AIBU to think that butter and marmalade with shreds is by far the best toast topping?

No one say Marmite... Bleurgh!

And do people really eat sardines on toast as I have never seen anyone do it so am starting to believe it is a myth.

Tragically Hip, that's precisely my point! The beans are the point of baked beans, shredless marmalade is like the tomato sauce without the beans. My mum used to make her own marmalade, it was always very chunky and super yummy.

My mum used to make her own lemon curd too, so much nicer than the plastic day-glo stuff you buy in supermarkets.

JoanofArgos · 08/04/2011 10:18

Peanut butter - rank with butter underneath, great without.
Jam - must have butter underneath,

Right?

TragicallyHip · 08/04/2011 10:21

If you take the peel out you are still left with marmalade!

JeffTracy · 08/04/2011 10:31

YANBU

I'm with fluffy. No shreds is just crazy talk. Mad. Completely mad.

Anyway - what about the toast!! Toppings are one thing, but marmalade on a nice rye bread or rustic seeded loaf is so much better than a tasteless factory white bread Smile

jimper · 08/04/2011 10:44

peanut butter with cheddar cheese - trust me, it is great!

bigbeagleeyes · 08/04/2011 10:51

Cheese on toast - food from the Gods

fluffyanimal · 08/04/2011 10:56

Can't abide any pre-sliced bread. Have to slice my own, whether white or brown.
Going to have toast now.

moogster1a · 08/04/2011 10:58

i still have toast toppers on a regular basis. Yum!!

puffling · 08/04/2011 10:59

You are correct. That is the best toast topping. However if you were referring to something like Golden Shred, I couldn't agree. The best marmalade is Tiptree Orange. I quite like Frank Coopers tho' it's a bit dense. I also like that French one in the tall thin jar, not marmalade in the British sense but still nice.
The other good topping is butter, peanut butter and marmite.

yomellamoHelly · 08/04/2011 11:01

Beans with grated cheese on top - grilled. Scrummy.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 08/04/2011 11:02

Just salted butter is good, marmite is great, cheese is fantastic and raspberry jam sensational.
I normally have one slice of toast with cheese ( not melted though that's just rank) and one slice with either raspberry jam or honey, occasionally I have lemon curd which is home made and loverly.

Bloodymary · 08/04/2011 11:46

ddubsgirl I remember the Shipphams factory, I went around it with the school one day. Quite interesting, smelt a bit fishy tho!

QuoththeRaven · 08/04/2011 12:22

bacon and mashed banana mmmmm

niminypiminy · 08/04/2011 12:36

Is there anything that toast isn't the ideal partner for (well, maybe not meringue or whipped cream)?

Anyway: marmalade (totally agree puffling Tiptree is the only acceptable bought stuff.
marmite
peanut butter
banana
butter
poached eggs
cheese (the cheese either toasted or not, depending on the cheese)
scrambled egg
sardines
honey
any form of jam
cinnamon sugar

Not for me:
beans -- just the sight of them makes me feel sick

HipHopopotomus · 08/04/2011 12:41

I've never liked marmalade or jam.

Peanut butter on toast rocks!!!

And I just love sliced tomato on toast (preferably crunch vogels toast) with salt & pepper. Cream cheese instead of butter very occasionally - yummy!

Vegemite.
Poached eggs
grilled cheddar cheese
Butter

BabyYoureAFirework · 08/04/2011 12:52

Raw egg yolk? Shock Ew.

You can't beat philadelphia and marmite on granary toast. It's delicious!
