OOps wrong place to put it, thought I was in chat. Should I move this?

In Compliance. Carrying less weight than normal and has had very good form in Ireland. Odds were 40/1 earlier today. I stuck a fiver on him. Also whichever you're looking at, keep in mind a mare hasn't won the Grand National since the 50s or something ridiculous. :)

Vic Venturi I think might also be one to watch. I'm stingy though!

usualsuspect · 09/04/2011 13:54

oooh ,I have Vic Venturi in the MN sweepstake

Karia · 09/04/2011 13:54

The race starts at 4.15 I meant to add! Can't wait Grin.

Karia · 09/04/2011 13:55

Ooh fingers crossed for you US. There's only 2 of us at work so no sweepstake for me this year!

SmethwickBelle · 09/04/2011 13:55

I've chosen horses on the tried and tested method of "ooo pretty colours" and/or "that name has a vague resonance with something personal".

sickoftheholidays · 09/04/2011 13:57

heres a tip - if its got 3 legs dont back it.
If its got 4 legs and has gone round the national course before and finished its got as good a chance as any in the race. I've seen the fences close up they are sodding huge and the speed/number of horses in the race its pot luck really.
Pray to God that all horses and riders come home in one piece.

grovel · 09/04/2011 14:04

Silver By Nature and Oscar Time. £10 each way on both.

Karia · 09/04/2011 14:50

Agreed SOTH. Even if you knew hands down which horse was most likely to win, it still has a pretty good chance of falling. :(.

My sister got odds on In Compliance of 50/1. Which isn't bad!

Was intrigued by BecauseICouldntSee. What kind of name is that for a racehorse?! Big Fella Thanks made me smile too, even more so when I saw he's Irish Grin

What I don't understand though.. horses with low odds like Don't Push It and What A Friend. Why do they only have an outside chance of winning but have low odds? This is the only time of year I bet on anything so I'm not an expert. But I do bloody love the Grand National.

mankyscotslass · 09/04/2011 14:55

I've gone for Grand Slam Hero, Tidal Bay, Silver By Nature and Oscar Time.

My mum went for Ballabriggs, as it comes from the McCain stables.

coastgirl · 09/04/2011 14:58

I'm going for Ghandi's Teapot, Old Man's Knackers and Herpes He-Man.

Karia · 09/04/2011 15:03

I'd love to see the look on the Queen's face if Herpes He-Man won Grin

I know its all over now but have to share (boast)...
My DD shouted out Ballabrigs as I was going through the names with DH. So Ballabrigs it was! Happy days!

firsttimemum77 · 09/04/2011 18:17

Woah just read the other posts! Seriously never been interested in the grand national ever first time I placed a bet! Had noooooo idea (naive perhaps) that horses die!!!!! I'll never bet again! My winnings will go to a animal charity!

I'm so ashamed now! :(

What good would it have done to stop the race halfway through? (Even supposing it could have been accomplished safely).

firsttimemum77 · 09/04/2011 18:28

zukiecat that is just so sad! I can't believe I never even thought of the cruelty aspect of horse racing until now!

I am so disgusted. Like I said never been interested before and never ever placed a bet! Don't know what made me today :s

Ah well, I've learnt something today!

Oh my god, I just read about Ornais and Dooney's Gate. Then I read that 5000 horses die a year due to racing. Now I feel fucking terrible that I bet on it and got excited about it.

I don't think I'll be watching the Grand National any more. :(
