fucking gravy

The pissing Bisto wouldn't thicken, so i got in a massive huff, said very loud, very bad words and refused to eat my dinner as it had cornflour thickened gravy that tasted shite.

AIBU that I don't know how to make real gravy?

I'm a relatively competent cook and I couldn't make a decent gravy if you put a gun to my head so no, YANBU.

Luckily my OH can make gravy so Sunday roasts are his domain.

Yes, YABVVVU. It is a piece of piss to make gravy and there are about a dozen really easy ways to do it. Can you not just google 'gravy recipe' next time, and then you won't get all huffy and starve Grin

I just got cross because I have to make seperate everything for the kids when making sweet and sour chicken as they all dislike seperate bit of the meal in faffing with that I burnt my noodles for my perfectly normal mixed together meal - buggers

it's less hard than you think, and nicer

i only make bisto if we are having sausages

you need the roasting pan, splash of red or white wine (depending on whether you are having beef or fowl), herbs of your choice, flour or cornflour

put a tbsp flour in a bowl with enough water to make a smooth liquid, cream consistency, mix with a fork wil smooth

put pan on hob with a goodly splash of wine and deglaze (scrape) the pan to get up and dissolve any crusty bits, you could chuck in herbs here too

when the gravy is boiling, slowly pour in some of the flour mix and stir, stop when the desired thickness is reached

this whole process takes about 5 minutes and it tastes lovely, really it is worth it

There are different schools of thought which seem to split into:

a) juices from roast cooked down
b) roux based
c) buy some

If it upsets you learn/adapt a way that works for you. Or buy some.

Can't make gravy well, but ....

Take the roasting oil and run-off
Add flour to make a paste
Add chicken/beef stock until you get the right consistency
Season

It kinda works ...

Gravy is easy honest.

Take the meat out the roasting dish, make sure all the juices are in there. Collect a cup full of hot water from boiling veg chuck in a spoonful of flour mix together.

Stick roasting dish on hob, turn heat low, chuck in flour and water use a metal spatula/vented spoon type thing to mix all together. If the juices are really fatty you can spoon some of the top layer off before adding flourwater. A tiny bit of vinegar can help if there is cooked on bits to the tray.

Takes all of about 2 minutes.

Obviously you can make it way more complicated. You can use cornflour instead of plain flour, you can add veg or meat stock. But the basic is fine.

evidently I don't know how to add cornflour since my bin is full of super thick brown paste.

I used half of the big container and it wasn't getting any thicker!

fucking bastard bloody bisto.

I can't make real gravy if I had pie (so no juices from roast)can I? (genuine question, not just bile fueled ranting btw)

You would have to have some appropriate meat stock in the freezer. then same again with flour and water.

(I just use bisto in that situation though! But much more granuales than it says on pack)

Gravy for pie?

I'd mix some veg oil with flour. Cook over a heat for a minute or two stirring. Very gradually add stock- veg or appropriate meat stock- stirring all the time.

Or, put a pan of stock on the hob, add wine, chopped celery carrot, onion, mushrooms, boil away for as long as it takes to reduce to a nice consistency and seive.
