to think that Sky Sports should sack Andy Gray and Richard Keys for this blatant sexism....

I know a lot of you don't like football but there was a female assistant referee officiating the game between Wolves and Liverpool yesterday. 2 of Sky Sports' main announcers/commentators were caught off camera (but with the mics still turned on, unbeknownst to them) making these remarks...

i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/01_04/sky.mp3

As a man, I can honestly say she did a good job and a lot of us on The Football Ramble forum believe Keys and Gray were out of order. What is the female perspective?

Here is a short transcript.

?Somebody better get down there and explain offside to her,? said Keys.

?Can you believe that? A female linesman. Women don?t know the offside rule,? said Gray.

Keys replied ?Course they don?t. I can guarantee you there will be a big one today. Kenny (Dalglish) will go potty. This isn?t the first time, is it? Didn?t we have one before?? And then he added ?The game?s gone mad. Did you hear charming [West Ham vice-chairwoman] Karren Brady this morning complaining about sexism? Do me a favour, love.?

Haha, jinx sarahitaly !!!

ln1981 · 23/01/2011 22:19

she would have studied the exact same rules as the men,
she would have been tested on the exact same rules as the men,
she is clearly as capable as the men (or not depending on your viewpoint of ref's in general!), why do they not get that?!

sarahitaly · 23/01/2011 22:21

Great minds sbsknickers, great minds....

And I don't care if it was said during "only a game..."...it is also a workplace, hers, and they made it hostile.

spongebobsquareknickers · 23/01/2011 22:23

Shes certainly more qualified than two men in a commentary box...

One footballer who wasnt successful enough to make enough money to retire ( Grin ) and a former GMTV presenter!!!

lastresort · 23/01/2011 22:26

Don't you think you are all getting a bit overexcited about this?

This is exactly what men love....women going over the top regardind something vso superficial as a game.

spongebobsquareknickers · 23/01/2011 22:30

The OP and saltatrix have both pointed out that they are male lastresort , and that the sexism bothers them too?

Dont be so sexist as to tar all males with the same brush - "This is exactly what men love....women going over the top regardind something vso superficial as a game."

clams · 23/01/2011 22:32

It's not being over the top regarding something as superficial as a game. It is being disgusted that these tossers talk about women in such a derogatory way. Near a microphone. Stupid tossers.

lastresort · 23/01/2011 22:34

ok fine...have it your way. other peoples opinions are so obviously not welcome.

Idlewild · 23/01/2011 22:35

She was right. My DH rewound it to show me. I didn't see the rest of the match but DH said she made one of two other good calls.

Anyway huge respect to her for running the line at that level. Andy Gray is a fucking twat. I have to turn the sound down whenever he's on. As for Richard Keys, I used to have a mild obsession with him back in the day (not in THAT way) because of his incredibly hairy hands but now he's had the fur lasered off I barely notice him.

SharonGless · 23/01/2011 22:36

Nope not overexcited at all.

Just pointing out that two men who have high profile exposure on television are sexist and imo should be pulled up over it.

sarahitaly · 23/01/2011 22:38

" women going over the top regardind something vso superficial as a game.

."

No it isn't JUST a game.

It is also a workplace, their and hers.

It is also a business.

You can tell this by her salary, the presenters salaries, all three having contracts, the money paid by spectators to watch on site and the rights being bought by a media company.

frgr · 23/01/2011 22:38

lastresort: "This is exactly what men love....women going over the top regardind something vso superficial as a game."

The problem isn't with the game, or any decision.

It's about questioning a professional's opinions based on whether she has a vagina or a penis.

Get it?

I am a woman and i know nothing of the offside rule and honestlt dont care . However if i were given the chance to be a linesperson (?) in an important and televised match ,i imagine that i would of spent a good couple of hours reading up on it Wink

sarahitaly · 23/01/2011 22:43

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission defines the creation of a hostile workplace environment as a form of harassment or discrimination. In cases of sexual harassment, harassment may include unwanted touching, offensive jokes and comments, or demand for favors in exchange for promotions or other compensation. A work environment can also be discriminatory if comments, displays, or jokes are offered that are meant to be offensive to a worker based on his race, religion, disability, gender, sexual orientation or ethnicity. A hostile work environment is further defined as interfering with the employee's ability to perform his job in a reasonable manner.

huddspur · 23/01/2011 22:45

Agreed LeninGrad she'll get horrendous stick from the crowd

Here is the actual clip

www.epltalk.com/andy-gray-and-richard-keys-aim-sexist-remarks-against-sian-massey-say-report-28711

Its a lot worse than disagreeing with a decision. Its the way they say

This isn?t the first time, is it? Didn?t we have one before??

meaning a female lino!

spongebobsquareknickers · 23/01/2011 22:46

I havent got a clue how to do the mass editing sarahitaly ???

Must be because I'm a woman...

Wink
Vallhala · 23/01/2011 22:51

As she's got that far the chances are that she won't give a shit what the fans yell because she's got one thing that 99.5 of them haven't got and will never have... she's got her badge. :)

It's something that makes a person feel incredibly proud of and the referee's community is like few others IME, one with real camaraderie, commitment and professionalism. It would take more than a bit of stick from some twat on the terrace to make most of us give all that up. When I passed I honestly didn't ever think that the day would come when I'd see women participating at the top level.

spongebobsquareknickers · 23/01/2011 22:53

So Valhalla , when are you gonna start working for the big boys? Wink

Actually I think I just discovered how to do mass strikeouts, in a very "apple falls on head" accidental way.

Am I the Marie Curie of mumsnet editing.

Vallhala · 23/01/2011 22:57

Too bloody old now Spongey!

If I were DD's ages (teens) I'd do my badge all over again and aim at reffing Chelsea in the FA Cup Final and ensure they won. :o

huddspur · 23/01/2011 23:02

It'll take more than a dodgy referee for Chelsea to win the cup Wink

Vallhala · 23/01/2011 23:09

Oh... oh.... fiddlesticks, huddspur!
