Utterly dreading hitting Waitrose

MatureUniStudent · 23/12/2010 10:00

I am sat here time wasting. I have tried to be scientific and work out when Waitrose will be the least busy today. I think over lunch time? Hence my time wasting before I set off. But I am totally dreading doing the Christmas food shop today. Furthermore I shall also have to go via Tescos to stock up on the value stuff - so that's two supermarkets in one day, the 23 December. However, there is one silver lining - I don't have to drag any children around with me! Skips.

I'll join you! Do you think we could hide in one of the room displays and spend the whole day there when they're shut?

BoffinMum · 23/12/2010 12:14

That would be quite fun. We can live another life and read Swedish books on architecture by the glow of tealights while having our feet rubbed by Bjorn Borg lookalikes.

BeattieBow · 23/12/2010 12:30

no I was in the brighton branch.

But ikea sounds a whole lot more appealing to me.

a lunch of jelly fish and daim cake. yum.

CaptainRex · 23/12/2010 12:35

Ive just returned from our local Waitrose and it was hell - the worst I have ever seen it, and the staff said it was just as bad yesterday - but then we did have a heavy snowfall yesterday so everyone seems to be panic buying in case it gets worse

Luckily I was able to get everything I needed and only a sort wait to pay at the self scan (I love self scan :))

FindingAManger · 23/12/2010 12:36

Due to lack of car & Xmas reloction logistics, I have to do ours tomorrow - on Xmas even, in a HUGE Sainsburys that is bedlam at the best of times - will go on my own - streamlined Xmas Grin

FindingAManger · 23/12/2010 12:37

goodness my typing!!! RELOCATION & Xmas EVE!

JenaiMarrsTartanFoxCube · 23/12/2010 13:01

In Bath Waitrose. Queue. OMG.

JenaiMarrsTartanFoxCube · 23/12/2010 13:03

Still, is a merry queue. A better class of Hades.

JenaiMarrsTartanFoxCube · 23/12/2010 13:04

Turkey leaking. Yuck.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 23/12/2010 13:10

The thing about waitrose as opposed to other supermarkets, is that they are really organized. They have people to herd the customers help, assign people to queues etc. Got a chocolate while waiting for a parking place, was told where to park, and because it was so tight, the parking guy carried DS to a trolley.

And then went to Tescos and got shoved by the potatoes Grin

JenaiMarrsTartanFoxCube · 23/12/2010 13:13

Am out. Provisions acquired. That wasn't too bad, actually Xmas Grin

MrsCratchit · 23/12/2010 13:43

Balham Waitrose was heaving about an hour ago.

cantgetlaidingermany · 23/12/2010 13:50

I'm braving Morrisons tonight....dreading it

mylifewithmangers · 23/12/2010 13:50

Our local Waitrose was a total bunfight about 2 hours ago. People were being nicely polite though, and they were handing out Roses in the queue. They also had most things in stock - which Sainsbo's didn't.

going · 23/12/2010 13:54

I'm going to the Welwyn one at about 4pm with 3 kids and a buggy in tow - am not looking forward to it! AM hoping they have potatoes left!!!!!

onceamai · 23/12/2010 17:56

After all that talk about Putney, I had second thoughts - turned the car round and drove to Colliers Wood where the parking's free and M&S and Sainsbury's are next to each other. All done and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. The clothes bit at M&S was almost deserted and the Per Una NEW stuff for the SPRING looks fantastic!

Will do the booze tomorrow and then it's all done - except the wrapping.

JenaiMarrsTartanFoxCube · 23/12/2010 17:59

From personal experience, I recommend wrapping, then booze Xmas Wink

onceamai · 23/12/2010 18:10

But they might be sold out - I have tons to wrap Grin

BigTillyMincepie · 23/12/2010 18:14

No Waitrose near me, it is SE London Wink

But Asda was OKish at 10 theis morning.

Then DS insisted we go to Tesco's for something he wanted - horrific Shock

Will have to do more of my wrapping when I come back in later

whoknowswhatthefutureholds · 23/12/2010 18:19

I've never been to waitrose..must try it, how much more is it than asda tescos?

JenaiMarrsTartanFoxCube · 24/12/2010 09:20

Depends on what you're buying, whoknows.

I find a lot of things to be less expensive; for example I try only to buy outdoor reared pork - all Waitrose own brand pork (including their Esssentials range) is outdoor reared whereas elsewhere you pay a premium for "Taste the Best" or whatever.

When I was only working PT and ds was a baby I went into town most days so used to pop in and pick up plenty of bargains.

I find their fruit and veg to be really good quality and lasts well.

CardyMow · 24/12/2010 12:05

I decided to make use of my late pregnancy insomnia. I went to Tescos at 12.30am. It was totally dead in there, so peaceful. Got everything I wanted except for streaky bacon (apparently been sold out for 2 days already), but I just got extra 'normal' bacon. Have no idea why other people don't do that at this time of year.

MilkNoSugarPlease · 24/12/2010 18:03

I went to Waitrose today...was HEAVING!

The queue was the entire way round the store!

yet we only queued for JUST over 10m (I timed it :o)

Got everything we wanted except for the scrummy Raspberry trifle (had to settle for the fruit cocktail one...turns out I like them even more! Happy days)

I love Waitrose! With every fibre of my being :o

StayingFatherChristmasGirl · 24/12/2010 18:24

I miss Waitrose! I haven't been to one since we moved to Scotland nearly three years ago!! Apparently there is one in Glasgow now, but I have never managed to find it.

Shopping in waitrose was always so civilised .......

Mind you - Waitrose was only for special occasions - I shop mainly at Tesco. But I do the big shop online most of the time now, so my nice tesco delivery man brought me all my food for christmas and up 'til New Years Day on Tuesday.

(The fact that a pile of fruit and veg froze because I put it outside as there wasn't enough space in the freezer is beside the point.Xmas Blush)

MatureUniStudent · 04/01/2011 17:31

Hocus - I was very nice to all the harrassed shop staff - Waitrose in Stortford was HEAVING and everyone was very un middle class and not very nice. It was trolleys at 50 paces...

However, I made it out, survived Xmas and New Years and as a treat, I decided to take myself over to the Largest, Newest, Biggest Sainsburys in the WHOLE OF EUROPE as a treat. (their advertising, not mine) Twas a let down, it was like 20 ASDA's but more upmarket with the same old stuff in it, but just tons more of the same old stuff. Great cafe for mums with kids though. (I did it alone on a "kids are at their dad's" day. Bliss).
