to think drinking the water from the hot tap is weird?

DH seems to think it is perfectly reasonable to fill the kettle with water from the hot tap, boil the kettle & then make a cup-o-tea.

Surely it can't be good for you to be drinking water that's sat around in a boiler & hot water pipes? Or am I just basing this on one of the many crazy notions my grandparents put into my head as a small child?

you are only meant to drink cold water from the tap.

from NY Times:
The reason is that hot water dissolves contaminants more quickly than cold water, and many pipes in homes contain lead that can leach into water. And lead can damage the brain and nervous system, especially in young children.

Everyone here speaks the truth, my dad is a plumber and always told us not to drink the hot water as it sits around in the tank.

The same thing applies to both the taps in the bathroom. Unless you have been told by a plumber that the cold tap in the bathroom feeds directly from the mains water supply, the cold water tap will feed from a tank in the loft. These are often not covered and have dead birds and all sorts in them.
It's fine for brushing teeth, but not for drinking regularly.
