Need a rant here!

My OH lost his job about a month ago now. he has been looking for work since and has done a few temp jobs but they have only been a couple of days here and there..so he had to take the plunge and sign on...

i work part time evenings (my income doesnt even cover our rent) so according to the government we are only entitled to £37 per week JSA..(yes bastard arseholes)

his brother is a complete lazy knob and has never worked a day in his life and lives on benefits (he disgusts me) anyways to the point he put on his facebook that he had got a crisis loan of £80..

so today we are really broke we need food and petrol for me to get to work so my OH decided to ring and ask about these crisis loans..we figured we would need about £40 to last us untill next friday when i get my tax credits so this is what he asked for..told them the truth and all the details...

They gave us £11. so a family of 3 with rent to pay.who always work.who pay council tax and bills and have a baby to support aswell get £11. his brother gets £80 for weed, booze, xbox games....

please someone justify this to me?????

If you haven't already done it,put in an application straight away for Housing and Council Tax Benefit, a CAB should be able to help. Ask for backdating.

Also, check your Tax Credits situation - are you still working enough hours to get Working Tax Credit?

I'm so sorry to hear what you're having to deal with........... I can't justify the system at all and from what I've seen there are winners and losers and people like yourself, who have worked but now lost their jobs, are short changed when it comes to help.

"told them the truth"

Expect that's got a lot to do with it. Without wishing to cast aspersions on your shiftless brother, people who know their way around the system will know which bits of the truth to embellish in order to get whatever's going.

natandchris10 · 11/11/2010 16:22

your right and the truth certainly doesnt pay these days..

yeah the tax credits is all upto date and all correct. we have put the housing application in this week but that is going to take 6 weeks apparently.

chil your right he lies through his teeth. if they apply the same working out to each person then the only way he can get that amount of money is by lying

Talk to your MP as well. They might be able to advise and lean on everyone (Housing Benefit?) to speed things up.

Simbacatlives · 11/11/2010 16:30

Why did he lose his job?

If he was made redundant he should be eligible for contribution based Jsa for 6 months regardless of what you earn. It's only about £65 a week though.

I don't think you should go the route of crisis loans, though.

You pay ridiculous amounts of interest on them.

have you got any other debts?

I thinka crdiet card ( if you already have one) would be more sensible in this instance - you won't pay interest at all if you pay off the balance by the due date on the statement (but be careful about running up a balance on it)
and banks often give free overdrafts (or you just pay a small amount of interest)
I went into my overdraft a couple of months ago by about £30 and my interest charged for the month was 12p.

BellBookandCandle · 11/11/2010 18:15

Nickel - you don't pay interest on a crisis loan nor on a social fund loan. How daft to suggest a credit card or incurring more debt via an overdraftHmm

If you're unhappy with a Crisis Loan decision you have the right to ask for a review. You must write to Jobcentre Plus within 28 days of the decision explaining why you think the decision was wrong and ask for it to be reviewed.

If you're still unhappy with the outcome, you can ask for a further review by a Social Fund Inspector. The review process is quick and simple, and should take no longer than 12 days.

You can download the leaflet and claim form, 'How to ask for an independent review' from the Independent Review Service website.

we are already in DMPs to get rid of all our old debts so neither of our credit ratings are anygood so were unable to get credit cards etc.

the crisis loan has no interest on it and you pay it back as and when. he lost his job because he was employed for a role which they couldnt fufil for him and they terminated his contract when he had a day off sick. it was all very strange circumstances and i think they messed up.its a very well known baby store and their staff turnover is really bad.

he is entitled to the JSA of £65 per week however they take into consideration what i get from my parttime job and deduct the differences etc which leaves us with nothing..

we have tried to sort something with our council but they are so rude in my area and basically say we should pay them before food, nappies, formula and petrol etc
