to think that pampas grass

is a well known indicator of swinging. Or is it just an urban myth? I was shocked to discover none of my friends knew this and then had to explain how i did know.

My Grandparents had a pampas grass! Shock

ApricotWorms · 08/10/2010 21:34

The old bat over the road has it. Eeew!

What other signs should I be looking for?

TattyDevine · 08/10/2010 21:36

We had a jolly great big bush of it out front growing up.

Ewwwww ewwww ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

LostArt · 08/10/2010 21:36

Yes it is.

Every other house in my street has it in their garden. I shudder to think what goes on behind closed doors. Grin

DramaInPyjamas · 08/10/2010 21:36

Do people still have pampas grass in their gardens? Haven't seen of any since the 80's.

pointydog · 08/10/2010 21:37

I think it's an urban myth. But one I delight in telling pampas grass owners.

bethjeff · 08/10/2010 21:37

lol that's hilarious.

We should come up with codenames for all gardens. EG:

The garden with waist high grass and beercans= chavs

The garden with pampas grass=swingers

The garden with thousands of ornaments=mentalists

Tippychoocks · 08/10/2010 21:39

Yes. And a house near my parents has a garden of half an acre or so entirely filled with clumps of it every few metres. Only visible from the top of a double decker bus.
What does that tell you eh? Swingers with bus passes.

LynetteScavo · 08/10/2010 21:39

Everyone knows swingers have pampas grass.

As I child I always thought I would grow pampas grass as an adult. Funnily enough, we don't' have any.

SmellsLikeTeenSweat · 08/10/2010 21:42

It might be that swingers plant it... but surely it doesn't follow that everyone who has it are swingers? What about those who don't know it's a sing?

SmellsLikeTeenSweat · 08/10/2010 21:43

Sorry, sign lol

muggglewump · 08/10/2010 21:43

My front garden is about 2 foot square, with a lampost in it.
I couldn't have a pampas bush even if I wanted to.

I don't btw.

My neighbours are all from the same family and weird, also not attractive, so no pampas here.

Hmm, I'm overthinking this but I'd consider it if someone good looking, about 25, single, moved in.
Every time someone moves out though, more of the mad family move in.

spiralqueen · 08/10/2010 21:43

My DH fondly believes it to be true. I'm firmly convinced it's an urban myth as I don't know anyone who was an adult in the 70s who believes it.

Chil1234 · 08/10/2010 21:44

The local hooker near where my friend lived used to put a vase of artificial flowers on display in the kitchen window when she was... erm... busy. Pampas isn't so easily removed if you decide to stop swinging.

Gibbon · 08/10/2010 21:44

yes doggers and gimps love a bit of pampas grass

muggglewump · 08/10/2010 21:46

Oh, my Aunty Audrey had a Pampas bush when I was young.
She was my Childminder.

Was she really upstairs shagging other neighbours whilst she fed me scotch broth?

deaddei · 08/10/2010 21:46

Well my mum and dad had it in the fifties in their garden.....now a lot of things make sense,
They also had a rockery with a windmill and garden gnomes. Does that mean anything?

creequealley · 08/10/2010 21:46

So where did it originate? We need SGB here to illuminate this discussion

AnnoyingOrange · 08/10/2010 21:47

we have a pampas grass Smile

fortyplus · 08/10/2010 21:48

NO!!! Honestly - it's an urban myth. Shame though - would be funny to think of my Great Uncle Sid as a swinger... Grin

RudeEnglishLady · 08/10/2010 21:48

YANBU

Common knowledge.

LynetteScavo - yes, I loved Pampas Grass when I was a child! It was the 70's everyone had it!

LilRedWG · 08/10/2010 21:49

We have it - I hate it but it won't bloody die!

Gibbon · 08/10/2010 21:50

ahhh you see Red, it refuses to die when the people that own the house are kinky. It knows it you see.
