To be loosing my patience...

Ooh Good! Now I've lured all you pedants in, with your catapults, back me up people.

I've just read my fourth frigging 'loose' of the day when the poster meant lose.

I don't pick holes in people's spelling generally/directly (unless they are wanky types) because it is a bit rude, and we aren't all perfect. (well I am obviously, but most of you aren't and I'm prepared to make allowances.Grin)

But anyway, I'm starting to LOSE my rag with this one.

Listen up:

For future reference, if you consistently muddle up loose (baggy) with lose (to part with) and all associated words, including loser, (twat) looser (baggier) losing (not winning) loosing (no such word in common usage)

then please, for the love of God, think of Fellatio (yes, literally think of fellatio, if it helps) every time you write the word. Adopt a word association thing, and I can cure you forever.

Thank you. Public service announcement over.

YANBU.

Unfortunately I think I've been guilty of one or two of these in the last couple of days, but it still drives me mad to see it Blush

YANBU I spot that one all the time, that and too and to.

Do you think schools stopped bothering so much with spelling after early eighties?

DuelingFanjo · 05/10/2010 16:48

YANBU.

It is annoying.

Unfortunately if you accidentally put an extra "o" in, spellcheck doesn´t pick it up.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 05/10/2010 16:50

On the whole, I have to agree with you, Fellatio - especially with your so-succinct definition of loser.

However, I do believe that there is a verb to loose - it is used mainly in the field of archery, where one looses an arrow - hence;

"Her heartbeat quickened as she watched him loosing arrow after arrow towards the target."

OOoops - appear to have gone all Mills and Boon there, for a moment! Blush

nickelbabe · 05/10/2010 16:50

YANBU.

Loose as a verb is archaic, but it can still be used when relating to clothing "to loose one's collar" etc.

for example

diddl · 05/10/2010 16:51

Wouldn´t it be "loosen"?Blush

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 05/10/2010 16:51

I did wonder about that, nickel - but concluded that one would loosen one's collar (or stays, if I am staying with the Romatic fiction oeuvre).

BusyMissIzzy · 05/10/2010 16:52

That was a mean trick, I only opened this thread to see how many posts it would take for someone to point out the mistake.

Now you've sucked all the fun out of my day.

Harrumph.

FellatioNelson · 05/10/2010 16:53

I understand why they do it - it's the oo sound, like look and book. It's a tricky one, and very commonly done. I don't want to point fingers or dish out blame. But now they can think of fellatio they really should be cured and there is no excuse. I shall adopt a zero tolerance policy henceforward.

Shouldn't that be henceforth?

FellatioNelson · 05/10/2010 16:57

Re: use of 'loose' as a verb, I was aware of it, but I also thought it to be rather archaic, and to bring it into the argument might just confuse people and sully the waters unnecessarily, so that's why I went for 'not in common usage.'

'Shouldn't that be henceforth?'

Probably, but at least I spelt it correctly! Grin
