To think that TA's shouldn't smoke in view of children in their class?

DH went on a school trip and one of the TA's lit up a fag near the kids - not right next door, but close enough for them to see. What would you do?

Tough call I think as it was on a trip so out of routine, however, YANBU, very bad example to show the children.

VivaLeBeaver · 22/09/2010 17:17

I think YABU (a bit). Its not ideal but on a normal day they would have a lunch break where they can smoke out of site. On a trip they are giving up their lunch time and probably not getting paid any extra.

Just keep the message up to your kids that its bad for your health, smelly, etc

huddspur · 22/09/2010 17:17

YABU provided they weren't stood so close that the children could inhale the smoke

VivaLeBeaver · 22/09/2010 17:17

sight not site. God!

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 22/09/2010 17:18

Yanbu
Very unprofessional

spikeycow · 22/09/2010 17:18

Wouldn't bother me. None of my buisness whether people smoke or not.

nikkershaw · 22/09/2010 17:19

they should go out of sight at least

usualsuspect · 22/09/2010 17:20

I wouldn't do anything

rainbowinthesky · 22/09/2010 17:23

No, they shouldn't have done it even if on school trip - still school business. If on a break they should have gone elsewhere. I'd complain.

spikeycow · 22/09/2010 17:23

Look, other people smoking is part of life. What is all this that children can't see this and can't see that. The only people I wouldn't smoke in front of are babies because it's dangerous. Not that I smoke but I don't agree with all this PFB stuff.

hocuspontas · 22/09/2010 17:25

You don't get a break on a school trip, that's the point!

rainbowinthesky · 22/09/2010 17:26

When I take children on school trips if someone cant last without smoking I expect them to take a break and go and do it elsewhere.

complexnumber · 22/09/2010 17:27

What would I do? Absolutely nothing.

Would you require parents to not smoke in front of their own children, how about parents in front of other people's children.

Have they done anything illegal?

Would you want it to be illegal? If so, how would you enforce it.

I'm a non-smoker, but as long as smokers are not blowing smoke into my kids faces, or in confined spaces, I don't have a problem with their habits.

Hulababy · 22/09/2010 17:28

Def shouldn't be smoking in front of the children IMO. Seems very unprofessional and not something I have ever seen from teachers or TAs myself.

If they eally can't manage to go without then they need to ask for a short break and go away from wherethe children are and out fo sight.

But then you don't really get a break on a school trip. It's just one of those things and the TA should learn to cope without a smoke for the time s/he is on a trip - just like I can't go and have a cup of tea or coffee when on a school trip.

LadyBiscuit · 22/09/2010 17:29

I wouldn't do anything. If it were one of the other parents, what would you do?

2blessed2bstressed · 22/09/2010 17:29

Maybe they had to be in sight so that the kids were in their sight, iyswim? Don't like smoking but think yabu a bit. As has been said already, no proper break on a trip.

mummytime · 22/09/2010 17:39

For every school I have worked in this would be a sackable offence. I would tell the Head.

usualsuspect · 22/09/2010 17:41

Shock at getting someone sacked

amberleaf · 22/09/2010 17:42

YABU

HappySlapper · 22/09/2010 17:42

You'd seriously want to see someone lose their job over a crafty fag, mummytime?

winnybella · 22/09/2010 17:45

Sackable offence?

Are you serious?

YABU, as long as they weren't blowing smoke over my kids, I wouldn't care. It's life, isn't it. Smoking might not be very good for TA's health in the long term, but, really it's hardly like they were drinking a bottle of vodka or shagging their boyfriend in public Hmm

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 22/09/2010 17:46

It's called the real world!

2blessed2bstressed · 22/09/2010 17:47

Mummytime, really? They deserve the sack? Shock

Spinkle · 22/09/2010 17:48

No, it's not really on but it's not worth getting sacked over.

btw I've taken kids on trips and I've had to ask the mummies to put the ciggies out and to cut out the effing and jeffing.

Nice.

lionheart · 22/09/2010 17:51

I would rather a calm, drugged TA than one craving for a fag to be in charge. Smile
