to think this neither funny or cool.....

Was on my way home today and had indicated and slowed to turn right into my road. Cars were coming so I stopped to wait, indicator still on.

Suddenly I heard the screeching of breaks and skidding sound and when I looked in my rear view mirror the car behind was swerving all over, at one point 90 degs to road.

The road is only 30mph limit and he was doing probably 50mph and therefore as he came over the railway bridge didn't see me until too late.

I quickly pulled away seconds before he hit me and pulled over as the driver gained control. He pulled round me laughing and waving out of the window leaving me sat shaken by the incident.

Some people saw what happened and the noise bought others out of their houses.

I am not sure I can do anything as I don't have the reg number but it scares me what could have happened but grateful I didn't have ds in the car.

and of course if he had hit you, he would have insisted it was your fault!

Some people drive like twats. Nothing you can do, just keep your wits about you, react fast and do everything you can to make sure they don't involve you in their accident!

Well done you for getting out the way, near misses can be very, very scary even though nothing actually happens. Funny and cool are two things they are very definitely not.

this happened to me years ago, exact same thing i was stationary waiting to turn right and heard screeching and looked it the mirror to see a van hurtling towards me, my reactions were not as quick as yours though and the van hit us, i had ds1 with me who was about 8 at the time, luckily i was driving a big car that took the impact well and we were not injured

it was bloody scary though, i just froze and waited to be hit, no wonder you were shaken, have a glass of wine you deserve it one

Mumbar - glad you weren't hurt. Did any of the neighbours etc get his reg? You should still call the police and report it.

Why the DM jibe? Sounds like a reasonable assumption to me. Even twats aren't usually as twattish as the op describes.

vinegar - sorry to hear about your accident - scary isn't it?

unfortunatly no-one got the reg as he didn't even slow down and some only came out because they heard the skidding and screeching.

I only have a KA so I'm sure if he had hit me the car would have been very damaged if not a write off so I'm lucky and I know that.

My friend came round and I went for a drive yesterday evening to keep my confidence - I am actually a confident driver but idiots like this are the ones that can make you lose it.

Wether he was under the influence of drugs or showing off to the girl in the car with him what made it worse was the laughing and driving off NOT stopping to cheack me or her were ok.

My local MP is lobbying for speed cameras along this road so if I contact him and tell him he may write about it in the local newsletter and maybe he'll see it or his parents!! (something tells me thats too hopeful)

sorry to hear oyu had such a near miss and it is a shock isn't it.

Something similar happened to me, on a country road last year. two lanes, and a sudden sign saying 30mph limit, on a bend. Went round the bend, high hedge and had to do am emergency stop at cars were in a queue cos they were roadworks. No prior sign. Typical Devon council roadwork signage.

Course in that instant as i skidded to a halt, i was aware of white van doing the same behind me, and i had to drive into the hedge to escape him. luckily it was a thin bit of hedge, and he had to pull into the other side of the road to avoid whacking me. As luck woud also have it there was nothing coming down the other sideof the road. I shook for the next 5 miles.

fwiw yes I am confident at driving long distance but as a single parent its either do that or go nowhere!

I have to admit I think some the the fear I endured is that ds is away with mum, dad and my siblings for 3 days and I have been worried if he hurts himself I'm not there to comfort him and it never occured to me something could happen to me and he would come home to find me hurt.

Like I said luckily it didn't come to that but fod for thought.

piratecat I'm glad you were unhurt after your near miss too. It was the shaking that made me realise how scared I had been.

You may have been scared OP, but not half as scared as he was I bet!

Problem is, within half an hour he'd be back up to 50 again, the incident forgotten.

I've been out today and walked past where it happened. The skid marks start about 25 meters before where I was and there's a real black bit exactly where I'd been waiting. It horrors me to realise just how fast he had to be going for this breaking distance - actually I'll look it up and post it here.

ccpccp It would be nice to think some good came of this and he'll think about his speed from now on - especially as when children go back to school next week there'll be many more cars and pededtrians along this road.

i would consider reporting this incident to the police, especially if you have names and addresses of witnesses - date/time/location/colour and make of car - it is very possible they will be able to get CCTv of the idiot somewhre close to where it happened, or will go and caution him if they get several complaints of a similar nature

and you will have a clear conscience if/when he causes an accident

Completely agree with Perpetually - I would report it anyway - you never know who might have been looking out of their window at that time - I'm sure the police will ask round the neighbours.

Reporting it is actually not a bad a idea when you look at it like that, didn't think of cctv elsewhere.
