To think that this is outside my 'reasonable request' job description? GREENSLEEVES DON'T READ

I'm a support worker. I work for a person with a disability, in their own home.

because of the actions of this person's family member, the wheelie bin has become infested with ... .

they were all over the back garden.

now, I cannot deal with them at all, couldn't even open the back door.

I asked the family memebr who caused the problem to come and sort it out, and they agreed, although were quite unwilling and grumpy about it.

So, was I being unreasonable?

no. unless pest control is in your job description?

RonansMummy · 22/08/2010 13:26

ewwww, no you should not have to deal with maggots, gross!

whoever caused the maggots should deal with it.

colditz · 22/08/2010 13:27

my job description is to "Support with every aspect of every day life and activities."

I suppose this could be levered into it, which is why I am wondering.

well, is maggot removal part of their everyday life? i doubt it. teh maggots are there because a family member didn't do something properly. this is not par for the course of caring for someone.

DiscoSquish · 22/08/2010 13:30

ugh no way are YBU :(

TitsalinaBumSquash · 22/08/2010 13:32

expatinscotland · 22/08/2010 13:33

YANBU.

Mowiol · 22/08/2010 13:33

Well I wouldn't deal with that either! Would you normally put bin out/clean it? Even if the answer is yes this is still above and beyond what you would reasonably be expected to do.
And how dare the family member be grumpy! Their mess so they should deal with it.

colditz · 22/08/2010 14:17

Yes, I would normally put the bin out - hoever, this week i didn't because I didn't feel able to go anywhere near it.

YANBU. No employment tribunal would ever consider maggots as party of daily life...
