The best before date is 13th August.

They've just been given to me by someone saying "They're fine, it's jsut a best before date"

As it is a week old now, i would throw, but 2 or 3 days over, then fine.

gingernutlover · 20/08/2010 12:34

I would have eaten them up til a couple of days after. Nearly a week is pushing it but if they smell okay and look okay then they probably are okay.

Ryoko · 20/08/2010 12:49

I've got shredded wheat thats 2 months out of date and Bonito dashi no moto thats 4 months out of date.

they sit there getting more out of date while I wonder if its safe, I think the dashi is because it's going to get cooked Hmm.

Yogurts I would never risk, live bacteria and all that.

CatButler · 20/08/2010 12:55

If they're those Activia thingies then I know from experience they literally live forever. God knows what they put in em.....

I always say 'if it looks ok, smells ok and tastes ok (little sample) then it probably is ok to eat.

LynetteScavo · 20/08/2010 12:55

Glad it's not just me then!

I'd eat them if they smell, look and taste ok

rotten food is quite easily identifiable on account of the fact that it is rotten

sapphireblue · 20/08/2010 12:56

A week over, I wouldn't. My limit would probably be 2 days over tbh......

silverfrog · 20/08/2010 12:57

I'd give them a try, tbh.

do a sniff check first, then a small taste test - you'll soon know if they are off.

but I've eaten yoghurt a week past it's dates before now, along with loads of other stuff - if it looks/smells/tastes ok, then it is.

Morloth · 20/08/2010 12:58

Sniff test. I think a week would be fine, I don't even look at dates of stuff in the fridge, I sniff it and if it smells OK I go ahead and eat it. Not ever had a problem.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 20/08/2010 13:01

I sniff and if that is ok taste and if thats ok then eat.

notquitenormal · 20/08/2010 13:11

I have eaten yoghurt 2 weeks after the best before date in the past. I was fine.

I probably wouldn't eat them if they'd been given to me by someone else though...I've no idea what conditions they've been kept in.

sanielle · 20/08/2010 13:35

Best before date is for dry goods.. NOT dairy.

HibernoCaledonian · 20/08/2010 15:42

It is stated that yoghurt is safe 7-10 days after sell by date.

This is a brilliant reference website.

Still Tasty

RandyRussian · 20/08/2010 15:55

Probably best binned TBH.

Make sure you return the 'compliment' with the giver at some future date Grin

lorna3 · 20/08/2010 16:15

lol, sniff and eat is my motto, at least a little as a test!
I think shops are very nervous about best before dates so put them really early.

Ryoko · 20/08/2010 16:18

Bread all ways goes moldy before the best before date.

LimburgseVlaai · 20/08/2010 16:25

If it's not fizzy you can eat it.

Fiddledee · 20/08/2010 16:25

Once had a lecture by a major manufacturer of yoghurt who said that yoghurt was better for you (more good bacteria) a week over the best before date.

SeaTrek · 20/08/2010 18:38

They probably are fine, but I wouldn't eat them.

Intrigued as to who would give your yogurts with a best before date a week ago? Reminds me of the time that MIL came round with a bunch of bananas that were more than a little over-ripe...

Funny how my parents do the same kind of things but I barely notice with them, as it is just 'them'. The IL's do something a bit odd and I am outraged! Just realised that! I guess that is another thread though Grin

thomsc · 20/08/2010 19:58

It's yoghurt. IT"S ALREADY 'off'. Like cheese! Never understood how cheddar has a best before date. It's already months old before you buy it.

If it smells ok and looks ok it's ok.

Best befores and sell/display bys are more for the shop and to make you buy more stuff. Ignore most of them.

taffetacatski · 20/08/2010 20:14

it tastes fizzy if its off

I would eat it but not give it to the wee DCs

atmywitssend · 20/08/2010 20:16

I'd eat it but wouldn't give it to DS.

Lynli · 20/08/2010 20:19

I wouldn't eat it. I know if I did I wouldn't enjoy it worrying if I was poisoning my self. If I was up all night being ill I would feel an idiot. All to save 50p

moomoo1967 · 21/08/2010 07:41

I would only go 3 days over at most, I am a standing joke in the office, everyone brings in their nearly out of date food for me lol ........mmmmmm not sure thats a good thing lol

alicet · 21/08/2010 07:49

I'm with the look smell and taste and eat if ok brigade.

I have eaten (and given to dcs) yogurt more out of date than this. If it tastes ok it is. We have all been fine
