that [hmm] sceptical smiley

is much over used on MN in my opinion. Each time I see it, I think the poster is trying to convey some sort of superiority but doesn't have the word power to express themselves.

Boring and been done to death IMO

and

claire70 · 24/07/2010 21:25

ok.. just to indulge me because i still like words better than pictures.. what exactly does it mean?

OP posts:
belledechocolatefluffybunny · 24/07/2010 21:26

[wish there was a yawn smiley]

2kids2dogsandahorse · 24/07/2010 21:26

I think it means hmmmmm or confused or wtf are you on about

MathsMadMummy · 24/07/2010 21:26

ohhhh no I love it.

but - I WANT A JUDGEYPANTS SMILEY!!! pleeeeeease MNHQ!

notnowbernard · 24/07/2010 21:29

I consider it a "yeah, right" response

claire70 · 24/07/2010 21:31

so belledechocolatefluffybun in this context does it mean "I want to be condescending" but can't think of the words/ be bothered to write them out?

JUDGEYPANTS smiley - that would be a good one.

Maybe its just that one smiley is being used to say 10 different things which is why it appears so often

... I think you are wrong
... your views are unacceptable
... I want to convey superiority
... I don't knwo what to say but I want to seem all knowing

etc etc

doggiesayswoof · 24/07/2010 21:36

Well, it's supposed to be "a sceptical face"

and I suppose there are many reasons why you might feel sceptical

  • I don't believe you (troll)
  • You're talking pish
  • I can't believe you just said that
  • You are naive
  • The scenario you describe is most unlikely

I've often seen it used in a self-deprecating way too.

IMoveTheStars · 24/07/2010 21:37

and

MiladyDeSummer · 24/07/2010 21:41

I think it's a very useful emoticon. I'm a moderator of another forum and insisted it was imported for use there too.

Wish I could make this face convincingly in RL to be honest

MiladyDeSummer · 24/07/2010 21:43

Agree it is often used in a self-deprecating way. I often use it to take the piss out of myself as opposed to this

ThatVikRinA22 · 24/07/2010 21:45

ive just been given the face while trying to suggest a school bag ffs! some bloody people....

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 24/07/2010 21:45

No, I really want a yawn smiley.

ThatVikRinA22 · 24/07/2010 21:46

a yawn smiley would be good.

LifeOfKate · 24/07/2010 21:47

It can be a little irritating when directed towards other posters, but I do like it very much when people are using it to convey emotions which have come to the surface when having experiences with stupid people (notably DPs)

For instance:

"DH thinks it is amusing to fart and then cry 'Ted!' as if the revolting sound/smell actually came from the cat and not himself "

HecateQueenOfWitches · 24/07/2010 21:50

Bugger the face, that damned biscuit makes me want to slap people. It's so rude!

scottishmummy · 24/07/2010 21:50

reading way too much into it.just a daft wee humphy face. the faces indicative a thread gone tits up

NancysGarden · 24/07/2010 21:51

I think the OP has a point: personally I think (and am not suggesting OP agrees) some people are quite rude on MN. But I wouldn't outlaw the , it has its uses for sure. As does which at times speaks when only rude words would do. Less rude.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 24/07/2010 21:52

I think we need a bull shit smiley, this would be fantastic.

QueeferSutherland · 24/07/2010 21:52

I like it.
I especially like it when done in a comedic was, as described by Kate.^^

eg
DS just ate a moth.

I still think we need a catsbum emoticon.

scottishmummy · 24/07/2010 21:55

pile of keech symbol would be useful

KickArseQueen · 24/07/2010 21:56

oh! A BULLSHIT SMILEY! Could it have little horns???

claire70 · 24/07/2010 21:58

I take your point LifeofKate! Just to clarify, I don't think it should be got rid of, just used less.

Maybe we could have a sceptical smiley, and a couple of others...any ideas? Maybe some people would like a V smiley (so they can rude with minimal effort!) and a nose in the air one for those who are trying to be condescending!

I'm not sure about a yawn smiley .. isn't that the same thing as just not reading or writing on the thread?
