DS (just over 1) is breastfed at present and has cows milk protein allergy. We are struggling to find a hypoallergenic formula he will accept as I am back at work and due to have shoulder surgery (we may not fully wean him but we need a back up milk).

We tried nutramigen and he wouldn't go near it. Tried for two weeks then gave up as he was starting to refuse all drinks.

Last week we were prescribed pepti jr under dietician advice. Started slow with arm, mouth tests etc. That was fine, next day he had some sips from a beaker didn't make a face seemed to like it no reaction. The next day i made his porridge with it and he ate a fair amount but then seemed to be gagging / clearing his throat. I noted this but he seemed ok but later in the day he developed a rash (that went with piriton) and he was generally out of sorts and had nasty nappies.

We haven't given him any since and I have been trying to ring dietician for advice. I'm so tempted to try again as he was teething at weekend, maybe it was heat rash etc etc.

Hes very active when feeding and basically really hurting me at the moment I'm not sure I can feed him much longer but I can hardly starve the child!

just needed to vent..............

hi there not sure if this helps but when I stopped bf my ds I put him on to formula which mad him very sick, poorly and just not happy, he did eventually get diagnosed with asthma, which he grew out of(long time ago he is now 13), but it was suggested to me to put hom on to goats milk as seemingly it is very like our breastmilk...it worked great and when dd2 came along I done the same when I need to stop bf her, and she loved it no problems either...
good luck

Thanks,He has been started on neocate. Every single HCP I have seen is adamant that goats milk is not the way to go. The proteins are too similar. The funny thing is he has had it and we thought he was fine but once I stopped it (on hcp advice) his excema and generally wheezy snottiness disapeared so it prob was affecting him just not as much as cows milk............It aint easy this allergy lark!

mrspotatochip, you really should avoid goats milk in a cows milk allergic baby as the changes of a cross-reaction are extremely high.

My ds2 also started to react to Pepti Junior after a few months of being introduced to it. Started very slowly (increased sickness, loss of already very tiny appetite) and then he got a typical allergic reaction (swelling, hives etc), so we stopped him on it. He now has Neocate Active (which is for over 1's), but we had to introduce that really slowy by mixing with EBM (he was still largely bf at that stage).

But, Pepti Junior and Nutramigen are both made from cows milk where the proteins have been hydrolysed (broken down) and although are fine for most children, can stil cause a reaction in some. (As is the case with both our ds's, obviously).

Good luck with the Neocate. It took ds2 a while to be convinced by it, but now he looks at it and sayes "mmm, milk, yummy" , so there is hope.
