Smooth oat porridge for baby

Hi my DS has CMP, egg and peanut allergies. He is 6.5 months old and i started weaning him 2 weeks ago - just giving root veg at the moment.
I was advised to give some oat porridge (it is possible he may be allergic to wheat i have to introduce it in a couple of weeks).
I cooked up some Flavahans oat porridge with his Neocate yesterday but he wouldnt eat it as it is very lumpy unlike packaged babby porridge.

Is there anywhere i can buy smooth baby porridge that is dairy/egg and nut free?

Thanks.

ready-brek?

wukter · 13/05/2010 14:23

Ready brek should work. It's just ordinary porrige oats milled extra fine.

haoshiji · 13/05/2010 14:33

Ready Brek does have added ingredients -

Wholegrain Rolled Oats (60%), Wholegrain Oat Flour (39%), Calcium, Niacin, Iron, Pantothenic Acid (B5), Vitamin B6, Riboflavin (B2), Thiamin (B1), Folic Acid, Vitamin B12.

Not sure if that is an issue for you?

You can get gluten free porridge in the free from isle in Sainburgs but it's like wall paper paste.

Slightly off topic but a bit of ready brek added to a crumble top when you make it gives a nice crispy top I recently found out!

Have a look for oatmeal. It's just ground oats, so has a smooth texture.

any salt in ready brek?

nellymoo · 13/05/2010 21:20

no salt

You could try pureeing the oatmeal after cooking and using more liquid that you would usually do. I have also ground up oatmeal first and then cooked which works well.

Plum Baby have one which is worth trying - not oat though.
plum baby - one thing to watch is that the four grains in the baby porridge (quinoa, millet, amaranth and rice) are not the same as the four grain with fruit which contains oat and spelt (which is so close to wheat that the FDA do not allow food containing spelt to be wheat free)

I gave DS2 this porridge not particularly because I was avoiding certain foods, but I was impressed by the range that they had, and it was smooth. I used to get it in Fresh and Wild, but they have now closed down here so I'm not entirely sure where you might get the range now - possibly an independent health food shop...? Good luck in your search and with weaning MPD

Thanks very much, i hadnt thought of readybrek, i think those ingredients should be ok if not ill look for oatmeal.

def try ready brek, i actually use it in prefernce to porridge oats because it's fortified which is excellent for a dairy/egg free baby IMO (ds2 and ds3 are the same, and veggie!)

i used the plum baby porridge for my boys, it was expensive compared to some brands but a little goes a long way and it was very easy to make up and my boys seemed to like it

I think it contains rice flour and DS reacted to pure organic baby rice so i think he may react to this.
