So, as some light relief from all of our allergy stresses with our LOs, I thought I would share my funny allergy.

I am allergic to calamine, of any sort, cream or lotion. It's ok to snigger, it is a comedy allergy.

Go back 25 years to when I had Chicken Pox, picture my mother standing me up and practically bathing me in the evil pink liquid, she turns away to get more cotton wool, she turns back and I have gone. She looks down and I am out cold on the floor.

Move ahead 15 years, I am now in the USA, a scuba diving instructor, young, free and obviously invincible and immortal. I get heat rash from some sun lotion (pattern is now emerging) so I buy some calamine thinking it was just a childhood thing or a figment of my poor mother's imagination. Wake up flat on my back on the apartment floor with the bottle of evil pink liquid smashed next to me and a rather large bump on my head from where it hit the coffee table on the way down!

Move ahead to another life when I have a marriage, mortgage and kids. DD now has chicken pox and they now sell the new aqueous calamine cream... surely that is not evil too?

Picture the scene, trying to dab cream on a hot, irritable crying toddler whilst fighting the urge to pass out cold, I get closer and closer to the ground trying to quell the 'whirlies. I am crouched with my head on the lovely cold bathroom floor whilst pathetically holding up a wad cotton wool covered in evil pink cream in the hope I will manage to get a dab onto DD as she runs past every now and then.

It's OK, snigger away. Anyone else have comedy allergies? Come and chat, two days of Peppa Pig, Charlie and Lola, and ITNG are driving me slightly mad. Please come before Barney finishes me off!

im allergic to codeine.it took a while to realise the i was taking pills to make me feel better and ending up in a far worse state because of the pills!the gp said its quite common -so im not odd!

nearlybeans · 25/10/2009 22:57

Washing-up liquid

TheOldestCat · 25/10/2009 22:57

Wow, can't beat the calamine. Poor you!

Am allergic to pomegranates, which is fairly odd. And I once had an allergic reaction to kissing my then boyfriend when at school (I'm allergic to nuts and he'd eaten a Quality Street 'purple one'). It was fun explaining that to my parents.

BoneYard · 25/10/2009 22:59

I am an artist and have many contact / skin allergies. I did a patch test and was told i am allergic (among other things) to paint (esp house paint and oil paints) and paper (and the chloroform therein).

cheeseandeyeballsarnie · 25/10/2009 23:01

boneyard you just reminded me!whilst doing alevel art i found i was allergic to the brand new state of the art ,art block at 6th form!bit of a pain!apparently it was to do with a building material theyd used!

BoneYard · 25/10/2009 23:09

Chloroform a pain though as i can't use white toilet paper or sanitary products other than 'natracare' - they have been a life saver to me!!!

BlueBumedFly · 26/10/2009 20:35

There is chloroform in toilet paper????

Your reaction to calamine lotion is just like my friends reaction to TCP. One whiff of it and she hits the deck.

I haven't come across anything I'm allergic to

serenity · 26/10/2009 20:45

I'm allergic to plasters which is a pita, as I have regular blood tests. Normally the answer would be cotton wool and micropore (hypoallergenic tape) but I'm allergic to that too... I used to scare the crap out of people waiting for tests by coming out with my arm swathed in bandages (before I gave up and now just hold the cotton wool on, and only occasionally get stopped with the 'y'know you've got blood pouring down your arm')

I'm also allergic or sensitive to all hypoallergenic make up, face creams, or washes. I'm fine with all the cheap stuffed-to-the-brim-with-scary-chemical things. Anything marketed for sensitive skin makes me go red, blotchy and very, very itchy.

MadameCastafiore · 26/10/2009 20:49

Latex - in a really big way - has proved to be rather embarrassing a few times in my life when I didn't need anything off putting or embarrassing happening!

GentleOtter · 26/10/2009 20:55

Vinegar. Instant beetroot coloured pufferfish face and staggering about as if drunk.

mamadiva · 26/10/2009 20:58

I'm allergic to the scent of male cats... not the fur just the territorial scent

Found out when I was 14 and my Aunt's cat sprayed near me and I went bright red and was sneezing violently for hours then my throat got all itchy and sore went to hospital and they could'nt figure out until my aunt said the cat had sprayed somewhere near me LOL.

I'm allergic to parmesan cheese. No other cheese though!

My mum is allergic to anti-histamine too.

BlueBumedFly · 27/10/2009 22:37

Iliketoquickstep - your tcp allergic friend is making me feel much better - hee hee.

Serenity - am also allergic to plasters, you should have seen the panic on the midwives/surgeons face when they struggled with my induction drip/my epidural couldn't be taped in place, antibiotic canulars and to add insult to injury c-section dressings! Don't risk trying calamine.... You never know, I think it's the zinc oxide.

Gentle - not funny of course but loving the drunk pufferfish analegy!

Mama - so, am guessing you don't have cats now?

Madame - hee hee singger

Boneyard - am guessing desensitization not working then!! Do you paint with gloves on???

Oldestcat - I am sorry but pomegranate is comedy! They are a comedy fruit to start with!!!

Babybarister... Celery! That is serious I know especially as poor ds is anaphylactic but it is a funny vegetable to start with !

I know all of these are serious but I have been suitably cheered that I am amongst friends with comedy allergies! Dd is much better too without the assistance of the evil pink liquid. Thank you all for cheering up my horrid week of allergy testing and chicken pox!!

I will have to post on behalf of my friend who really is allergic to come then

She comes out in a nasty rash if she gets any on her skin! Can make her uncomfortable 'in the morning' too obviously. We never went too far into it though as she was my team leader at the time!!

DH is allergic to some raw foods. Peppers, apples, strawberries mostly. If he eats them raw, his throat feels tight and he gets wheezy. Cooked, he's fine

My mum is violently allergic (among many things) to guinea pigs - can't go within 2 metres of them.

She is also v allergic to E45 cream, which is inconvenient, and tomato plants, but not tomatoes

TheBlairSnitchProject · 28/10/2009 08:40

Luckily, I never get that urge

moonmother · 28/10/2009 09:05

I also have a quite bad allergy to Guinea Pigs- we used to breed and show them when I was about 12 and I think the fact we had so many (30 at one time) made me allergic.

I have to take Piriton if I use my parents bathroom as my DB has Guineas in his bedroom.

I'm also allergic to Balloons- was fine until a few years ago when I blew some up for DD's birthday and my face swelled so much I looked like a Klingon.

I had a bad accident with Calamine a few years ago- my DS had prickly heat and I had put some on him before bed, and had left it on my bedside table.

I always take a glass of water to bed with me, and somehow in my sleep opened the bottle of calamine lotion and drank that instead of the water. Within 30 seconds it made me start being violently sick and I ended up in A and E at about 2 in the morning. It was very .

BlueBumedFly · 28/10/2009 19:28

I cannot believe once a thread is live you cannot change the title

I claim sleep deprivation and evil calamine poisoning and Peppa Pig re-runs

HalfMumHalfZombie · 28/10/2009 19:39

I am allergic to aspirin. I found out when I had period pain at school. The nurse gave me aspirin and my face and neck swelled up. Talk about adding insult to injury.

I am also allergic to lots of caffeine in high energy drinks and found out at a music festival when I drank one to keep going. Turns out it makes me have a migrane and basically go blind. Not that great when watching The Prodigy.

Gumps · 28/10/2009 20:05

I have an allergy to snow on my face. If I get pelted by a snow ball it swells and goes red and hard. So much so that I wouldn't go out in public.
True I swear!

Time2Hibernate · 28/10/2009 20:18

Pineapple gives me the biggest migraine symptoms before I pass out and secondly, Penecillin goes straight to anaphylatic shock and then head to foot in nasty oozing rash which lastest over a week. My DH didn't recognise me

I giggled with an anaethetist before surgery as when asked re allergies and I said pineapple without thinking....course they had to make a big issue about not operating with fruit etc
