not sure why i am uncertain, should i trust the doc?

ds2 has always had a very bad allergy to pollen, mild allergic asthma and a bad skin reaction to mils german shepherd.
he had a blood test a while ago which proved positive to them aswell.
yesterday at the allergy clinic they said that as he had never had a skin prick test they were going to do that. the only one he reacted to was the pollen.
so, we have always desperately wanted a dog and we were chuffed that he now seemed apparently ok with dogs. i questioned the accuracy of the test and the doc said, yes i would believe it , there is no reaction.
so, why am i still hesitant?
anyone have any experience?

i would love to get us a dog but i dont want to find ds2 is really allergic and have to rehome it and break his heart!

Some dogs are known for being better with allergy sufferers anyway. Non- molting definitely seem better for me and I have a slight allergy to dogs (though I have been told that it is not the hair people are allergic to!)Not sure how accurate it is, but I suppose coupled with the test results, I would go for it.

If you get a rehomed dog from the RSPCA, they will let you spend quite a lot of time with the dog before you take it home, so you could see if your DS has any reaction.

My ds is also allergic to dogs-verified through skin tests and experience
We had a dog (before ds was born) .

The dog affected him if he was licked, hives,itching and swelling to eyes ,same as me.We had to wash our hands after we touched the dog which is a pita really.

Didn't affect his asthma or eczema .

Now dog has died so we don't need to worry but I do miss having one.

How does your ds react to dogs now?

i dont know how he reacts anymore as mil moved away about 2 years ago and because he always reacted to her dog he knows not to touch dogs. he just hasnt been in close vicinity to any dogs as none of his friends have dogs either.
as far as i can tell yorkies, poodles and maltese dogs are least allergenic so if i could find one to borrow lol that migt be good!

My dh had skin prick tests done as a teenager and was confirmed allergic to a lot of things including cats and dogs (both of which his parents had several of).

He has allergy related asthma, so they affect his breathing rather than bringing him out in hives.

We have however, still had dogs all our married life (dh loves dogs and so do I) and he seems to have outgrown the allergy. We currently have three very hairy wee beasties and he doesn't react to them at all.

I assume he has somehow managed to desensitised himself to dogs over the years by maintaining regular contact with them, as he is still highly allergic to cats and we don't really have much contact with cats.

It depends on what type of reaction he has I think. Some people are only allergic to the 'dander' in a dogs coat and therefore this can be managed to a certain extent by choosing a hairy rather than furry breed (ie one that needs clipping as the fur continues to grow rather than continually sheds) and having them groomed by a professional dog groomer on a regular basis. Other people also react to being licked by dogs and come out in a rash as a result, this is obviously harder to manage.

You could try approaching the breed clubs of the particular breeds you are interested in and see if they can put you in touch with a breeder that wouldn't mind you visiting to talk about the breed and see how ds is with them. Most breed clubs have their own websites these days if you Google them.
