Egg allergy and MMR - have you done it?

DS has an egg allergy. He had his first MMR with no side effects before this was diagnosed.
He is now due for his 4 year booster. The doctors surgergy says it must be done in the hospital under supervision.
This makes me VERY nervous. Does anyone know how likely a reaction is and how dangerous this might be?

does he go into anaphylactic shock when he has egg?

dd is egg allergic and had both MMRs in the GP's surgery. Paediatrician said there was absolutely no need to do it in hospital.

No shock thank heavens - just vomiting to anything with a trace of egg on/in it anything up to a couple of hours later - At least that's all i've seen so far. We avoid it madly as clearing up vomit is not my favourite activity. let alone the horribleness of having sick child.
The paed did tell DH at last visit that egg is such a large protein it is rarely absorbed into the body - the body just vomits it out first so that is why I don't know.
If this is true and there is the possibility of egg in the vaccine its going directly into the body so I've no idea how he would react.
Does that make sense or am I rambling?

yes that makes sense but if he had no reaction to the first jab at all then I wouldn't be too worried (though I do find mine can have degrees of allergic reaction at different times).

What does the paediatrician think?

Got an appointment for the paed on 30th June, with a handwritten note saying he can have the mmr in the ward after it.

dd has egg allergy, (white and yolk) and had to got to hospital for her first mmr...

She was fine, no reaction at all! The one time she ate egg she came out in hives, have avoided it since...

Is very stressful having to go to hospital for vaccinations (which are stressful anyways!) Am dreading having to go through it again, but since shee was fine first time, hopefully will be okay...

Yes, dd did, in the GP surgery. No problems at all.

My GP was unsure, wrote to the consultant who ran the allergy clinic dd attended, who said, as Podmog says, there is no egg in MMR (thought I think she said there used to be, not sure though).

The measles part of the MMR is cultured on the chick's embryo as are alot of vaccines. You can find this info on the internet.
I did the single vaccines for DS who has an egg allergy and no reaction. Was told there is a clinic that does the single vaccines NOT cultured on a chick embryo but didn't feel it necessary to go that route.

Ds went into anaphylatic shock with egg - rather than just an allergy. He had his MMR in hosiptal, as they had the resus necessary if required. It is policy here.

When I was weighing it up (didn't do it in the end, but that was more to do with the neomycin) I spoke to a paed. who said they had had 1 reaction at the hospital in 5 years, and that the kid was allergic to heaps of things and it could have been any component.

My GP did not want to do the MMR at all. For one thing he didn't have the facilities for us to wait a couple of hours after the injection except in the waiting room, which wasn't ideal. I think he was also freaked out at the possibility of having to resuss a toddler without being in a A&E department.

Bobybob - I think that is the reason for my GP refusing too.
Interesting about chick embryo rather than egg.DS eats chicken no problems. I wonder when the change comes that stops the allergic process I guess it is the protein in the egg itself that the chick uses in development that causes the problem and not the protein in the muscle which is what you eat in a chicken.
I'm sure that the hospital originally told us that there was no problem but the nurse at the GP surgery rang the manufacturers of the vaccine and was told that it was cultured on egg. I don't know who to beleive any more.
I think I will have it done, but it does worry me that all the medical professionals seem to have such differing opinions.

Alison, you can ring the manufacturers yourself and ask for Pharmacy information. You will be able to speak to somebody there who will give you the correct info.

My son is allergy to eggs, wierdly it seems to be if egg is eaten pure (fried, scrambled, quiche) but not in a cake or pancakes, something to do with proteins. I am still very careful and we decided to have single jabs and this worked well for us because there was something in the separate one that are given at 4 months that reacted with him.

We were offered the mmr in the hospital but the clinic that we went to gave me all the reassurance that we needed about how much egg was in it and they took alot of care of him and said we could stay around as long as we need and had an epip pen and adrenalin ready if he did react.
